It is with great sadness that we announce that San Francisco Giants Legend and Hall of Famer Willie Mays passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 93.
So sad to hear this. A great ballplayer and a great man.

(13,600 posts)I never get tired of watching this play.
I read a while back a reminiscence by another player who said Mays had the greatest total awareness during a game of any player hed ever seen always understood every aspect of every play, including the capabilities of each player on both teams, and saw all the potential outcomes of a play as it unfolded, on every part of the field. A true baseball genius.

(19,438 posts)I always make sure to stop and spend some time with Willie outside near the Willie Mays gate- Willie's always a presence at the ballpark. When you're with The Giants, Willie's legacy is always felt.

I got a kick out of this stand-

And here's The Treniers singing "Say Hey (The Willie Mays Song)" from 1955:

(592 posts)My dad was a NY Giants fan and a Willie fan. He took me to the Polo Grounds and Ebbetts Field to see him play. I was 7-8 years old. I followed his career in SF and finally with the Mets.( Mets fan since 62).

(8,003 posts)...raised as a Giants fan.
He was the greatest baseball player of all time, not just because of his tremendous skill and effort every time he took the field, but as a living example of all that was right about sports.
It is hard to describe what it was like to listen to baseball games on the radio broadcast by the great Lon Simmons when the Say Hey kid was working his magic on a Saturday afternoon.
Right up until the end of his life he still hung around the team he loved and shared his joy for the game.
Rest in peace Willie.

(3,363 posts)Though it was his famous catch that doomed my hometown Cleveland Indians in 1954, he was a class act all the way, from beginning to end. I also loved his cameo appearance on Bewitched in 1966!!
