Is there a law that says you must run with a VP? If there is no VP candidate, does someone get promoted to fill the spot?
I can see where CONVICTED FELON tRump might want to forgo selecting anyone, especially since it didn't work out so great for him the last time. What's to prevent him from saying, "Screw it," and just going bare, so to speak? That little ceremonial role at transition of power doesn't matter, and can be filled by that next guy, push come to shove. Other than jerking potential suitors around, what's in it for him?
I can't find where it states that we must fill the position of VP.

(106,590 posts)There's nothing saying "it must be the candidate named in the election along with their choice for President".
However, I can't see Trump ever wanting a VP other than one he has hand-picked to be the right balance of obsequiousness and MAGA belief. I suppose he'd have the option of not naming a VP before the election, and then springing, say, Don Jr. on the world as his choice after he somehow won, but I think even he would see that not naming one would make wavering voters more suspicious of him, not less.

(106,590 posts)they do say for a party to get on the ballot, the state chair must certify "the names of the party's nominees for president and vice-president", so that doesn't allow them to use a "TBD" at that point. Not surprising, but with Trump, you never know when he might try and say "norms don't apply to me, because I'm so fabulous".

(96,882 posts)Trump will pick a VP candidate. States that vote for Trump will vote for Trumps VP (unless he picks Rubio, in which case their electors have to vote for a VP not from the same State).

(106,590 posts)because Trump fucks around. The precise wording of state laws on the election is not exactly well known, so it can be worth checking. The one advantage of having no VP that I can think of for Trump is that it removes the possibility of the 25th Amendment being invoked against him. But getting a tie-breaking vote in the Senate would be an advantage for any president.
" I honestly have no idea why anyone expects this election to be different" - because it will feature a candidate who tried to overthrow the result of the last one. He and his unhinged lawyer friends looked for ever-more ridiculous loopholes, before whipping up the Jan 6 mob. I expect they will have already checked out the possibilities involved with the VP nomination.

Must be invisible. Never take the limelight from Donald.
