He made that comment in an interview with George Stephanopoulas. A long article about Vance was published by Politico on March 15, 2024. That article suggests that the GOP will not want Vance as the VP candidate, since he is useful in the Senate for the purpose of furthering GOP goals.

The GOP establishment doesn't like JD Vance, the same way that they don't like Mike Lee and Rand Paul. They are a bit isolationist, and generally oppose war. The MAGA wing also LOVES Vance.
