Some Democrats began calling for President Joe Biden to step aside so that the party can nominate another candidate after he stumbled badly in Thursday's debate against his Republican rival, former President Donald Trump. "This was like a champion boxer who gets in the ring past his prime and needs his corner to throw in the towel," said one Democratic lawmaker, adding that he meant Biden should exit the race.
The options for a switch are limited: If the president doesn't choose to leave of his own volition, there would have to be a revolt among Democratic National Convention delegates, the vast majority of whom were elected on their pledge to nominate Biden. But that's what some Democrats were thinking about Thursday night.
It's time to talk about an open convention and a new Democratic nominee, said a second Democratic lawmaker who has been a solid Biden supporter.
The fear among these Democrats is that the version of Biden that showed up to the debate one bearing a likeness to the caricature Trump and his allies have portrayed of a man unequipped for the job cannot win in November.

How comfortable are you with spreading negative opinions from people who can't be bothered to identify themselves?
What is this shit good for, anyway? Who is it serving for supposed Democrats to anonymously trash this incumbent president?

(5,370 posts)I suspect historians will be too busy sifting through the smoke and ash to worry about the opposition.
Hitler, Goebbels, Eichmann, Mengele, et. al. get a lot more ink than Hindenberg. A lot more books written about them. I suspect most people don't even know the latter's name.
I'll ask the same question I've asked repeatedly. Who should be the candidate instead? Who polls better against Trump than Joe?
And, frankly, it'll be the American people's fault if Trump gets back in. Nobody else's. A potted plant should be preferable to him. Yet he got more votes in 2020 than in 2016 and only barely lost the Electoral College. Who did that? The voters. Who don't pay attention. Who don't even know how their own government works. And they don't want to know. They'd rather watch cat videos. They'd rather have a candidate who entertains them than promotes solid policy. Who's to blame for this? In a representative democracy voters are expected to be educated and well-informed. If they aren't, it's on them. If America goes down, it'll be the people's fault. Plain and simple.

To be clear: four years of good governance and open process was not negated by the ambush at CNN's dog and pony show. Especially when there is no discussion of the observable mental confusion a convicted felon has, who may well be jailed in a couple of weeks, and who faces much more serious crimes in at least two more courtroom. Where's call-out for Mango Jebus to get out of the race?
That old white men like me are more than appropriately represented in politics, (though not so much in the Democratic side of the House) is a fact. It does need to be addressed. Just not during this election.
This really does need discussing. But not now. We are in a fight to save democratic principles this nation was founded on: this is the fight between Democrats and Republicans. This is a valid discussion. But not until Jan 21, 2025. And everyone needs to stop harping on Joe's age without mentioning that Mango is another old white male.

(98,883 posts)wrong suggesting an open convention?
Or will it be like those self-identified progressives who refused to vote for Hillary in 2016, and contributed to
where we are today, with the David Sirotas, Cornell Wests, Susan Sarandons, Nina Turner, Brihana Joy Gray who still have no regrets for their actions of not only refusing to vote for Hillary, but encouraging others to do likewise.
In every critical swing state Hillary lost by less than 1%, while in those critical swing states Jill Stein received 1% of the vote.
The ones who SHOULD BE RICHLY BLAMED are those from 2016 who refused to VOTE FOR HILLARY, and if trump wins the white house again, the one's who should be blamed are not only those who won't vote for Biden, but also those who won't recognize that VP Harris was there to take over if necessary.
NO PROCHOICE WOMAN IS GOING TO VOTE FOR TRUMP, OR NOT VOTE FOR BIDEN BECAUSE OF ONE BAD DEBATE, BECAUSE THE ISSUES HAVE NOT CHANGED WHERE THE CANDIDATES STAND.
and frankly, anyone who cannot understand that simple logic is NOT THE SHARPEST TACK IN THE BOX.
Nothing has changed, and I am thoroughly disgusted by this pile on bullshit, not unlike what they did to Al Franken.
The reason we lose elections isn't because of the "vanity of an old man", but the ego and vanity of those whose ideal candidate wasn't there, and will never be there, because even those throwing out names, can't agree.
They should be embarrassed.

(23,258 posts)not one single Democrat that the reporter contacted wanted to be named.
Go read the entire article. Not one single named source. "A Democratic lawmaker." "A Democratic strategist." "A Democratic operative." And on and on.
I have no doubt that these are real people who actually said these things to the reporter. But the fact that he couldn't get a single one of them to give their names tells me that this ain't exactly a popular point of view. This isn't Trump's MAGA cult where non-believers are excommunicated -- Democrats are usually quite happy to shoot each other in the foot when things go wrong.
Yet the reporter couldn't find a single source willing to give their name along with what the reporter is implying is a popular opinion within the party.
If actual named Democrats actually start laying into Biden from the sidelines, I'd say we have a problem. Otherwise I'd say this is just shit stirring on the part of the reporter.
