Holding you and everyone there, people, animals, plants, living earth, water, etc., in the light to be safe and survive mightily.

will be serious damage. The good news - its moving at 22mph - a hit and run. Recovery will start quickly.

(140,663 posts)I am shocked how fast it is moving and has been doing so for an extended time too. They normally move at 12 - 15 mph and only hit that faster speed if they manage to get captured in a jetstream. Hopefully it will be in and out quick.

(113,065 posts)for weeks, maybe months. Airports will be shut down for everything but emergency supplies, harbors will be completely wrecked and need to be cleaned up before even yachts can safely come in.
It's a hard judgment call to make. Leaving will ensure survival, but there would be nothing left to return to. Staying is dangerous, but at least you'd be home, even if home is a blue tarp stretched over rubble and a daily scramble for bottled water and sandwiches, looking for things to salvage.
It's grim either way.

(7,160 posts)Beryl downgraded from a record-breaking Category 5 as it heads toward Jamaica
Hurricane Beryl was losing some steam Tuesday afternoon as it closed in on Jamaica.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Beryl was downgraded to a Category 4 from a Category 5, but its maximum sustained winds remained dangerous at 155 mph.
Beryl is forecast to continue to weaken as it moves through the Caribbean Sea but is still expected to be a major hurricane when it reaches Jamaica on Wednesday.

malaise
(277,353 posts)But there is another statistic that doesn't usually stand out, but you'll typically see on a graphic. A storm's forward speed can play a major role in the damage it is able to inflict.
According to NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, a hurricane's average forward speed is about 11 to 12 mph in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and tropical Atlantic Ocean from 10 to 30 degrees North latitude.
It's those hurricanes and tropical storms that move much faster or slower that can amplify its destructive potential. There have been a number of each of these recently
Beryl is a very fast mover 22mph now but it has intensified rapidly.
