In the wake of President Joe Bidens poor debate performance, his opponents and most major media organizations have pointed out that he has done few interviews that give the public an opportunity to hear him speak without a script or teleprompters.
So much has been made of this limited access that the impressions from Special Counsel Robert K. Hur about his five hours of interviews with the president on Oct. 8 and 9 drove months of coverage. The prosecutor said Biden had diminished faculties in advancing age and called him a well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory. Biden angrily dismissed these assertions, which Vice President Kamala Harris called politically motivated.

ProPublica obtained a rare interview with Biden on Sept. 29, nine days before the Hur interviews began. We released the video, which was assembled from footage shot by five cameras, on Oct. 1. We edited out less than a minute of crosstalk and exchanges with the camera people, as is customary in such interviews.
Today, we are releasing the full, 21-minute interview, unedited as seen from the view of the single camera focused on Biden. We understand that this video captures a moment in time nine months ago and that it will not settle the ongoing arguments about the presidents acuity today. Still, we believe it is worth giving the public another chance to see one of Bidens infrequent conversations with a reporter.

(43,307 posts)we're witnessing journalism wars (similar to the past years of lawyer wars) because journalism is a calling, not an enterprise. Because in our democracy truth matters more than profit.

(2,713 posts)He helped start this crap about Biden's "memory" issues.
Biden has been stuttering and stammering and gaffing his whole life, continuing when he was 30 years old and took office in the Senate and eventually to the White House.
This is what pisses me off so much about too many comments here and elsewhere. I am old enough to remember Biden when he first came to the Senate and know about his demeanor.
Most of this criticism is rooted not in concern for his health but in good old ageism.

(594 posts)are Republicans so much better, it seems, at selling utter inflated horrible bullshit than we are at selling the truth.
Speaking "truth to power"..
We should get everybody who is good at this out on the road and with coverage on all the media we can reach, particularly President Biden and Kamala Harris.

that Biden has conducted few
Interviews for a Presidenrial candidate is also true. If there is no issue with Bidens health, then it is political malpractice for him not to be conducting more interviews to promote his record and attacking Trump.

(10,333 posts)People that want to believe that Biden has mental problems and/or promote that narrative will continue to do so regardless of who he sits down to an interview with and regardless of how many interviews he does. There are ample examples of Biden having no issues whatsoever in various forums like these -- this unedited from ProPublica is yet another example -- and yet the narrative remains because it is a political cudgel being used against him by all sorts of foes: his Republican opponents, his foreign adversaries and their bot/troll farms, so-called progressives/liberals on the left that want to see Biden step down so that they can promote their own candidate(s) in his place, journalists that feel they are entitled to his time and feel as though he has snubbed them personally, etc.

as many media appearances as possible. The way you describe Biden rewarding News organizations makes him sound petty, and I dont think Biden is petty. Biden also used to be a regular on the news talk show circuit like McCain. Not making unscripted media appearances plays into the narrative. Biden was excellent, intelligent, and approachable in interviews:
