Still reeling from Monday's devastating SCOTUS decision, I came back to DU today in hopes of finding the comfort and camaraderie I have always found here, along with a sense of renewed commitment to fight the good fight in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds.
What I found instead was post after post about how "Joe must go".
"But what about his debate performance" is the new "But what about her emails."
"We'll do just fine with a different candidate." In other words. let's tell voters that Democrats will fight for democracy, freedom, and the Constitution - we just won't fight for our own President.
Joe has had our backs for three and a half years. It is beyond sad that so many people here no longer have his.
And with that said, I leave DU. I just want to offer a final thank you to EarlG and Elad for all they've done in the past, and to all of you who have befriended me over the years. I will miss you more than I can say.
With a corrupt MAGA Supreme Court in place, our democracy is hanging by a thread. Our best chance to salvage what's left of that democracy is Joe Biden, a proven fighter.
I simply don't want to be around those who can't move fast enough to throw him under the bus.

Many (almost all) were from sleeper accounts with few posts. I cant know their motivation but their behavior was uniformly disruptive. They all got the heave-ho.
Im telling you that to say this- DU stood up for Joe. Its been a rough few days but the preponderance of DUers get it. The push to replace Joe is a)stupid, b) doomed to fail by design and c) a gift to the orange devil. They will fail. Joe will win. We will prevail.
Be well, take best care of your precious lovely true blue self, love. See you when I see you. Aloha nō Nance.
Ps I remember when I left DU once. It made me cry too. Sending you love and hope for healing (and a blue tsunami.)

It would be important for members to know that this is what's been happening on the board.
It's not a surprise to me that sleeper accounts have been activated to disrupt us.
Remember, one of the goals of an oppressive regime is to have the oppressed fight against each other.

(105,866 posts)and there are a hell of a lot of us--even despite the loud barrage of constant posts to the contrary.
I'm dipping in, skimming through the pages, and being very selective as to what I read. Hell, I've not been able to even discuss the whole issue since the debate with my sister (who I speak with by phone daily) or others that I already KNOW feel as I do. I'm just holding my breath for a while and taking it day by day.
But. it still helps to know like-minded "friends" are out there, as there are here. And we are going to need them even more when things calm down.

And after reading one too many "gotta go" posts I posted this:
Joe Biden has already beaten Trump once. Trump hates that, hes afraid that Biden could do it again. Biden had a cold at the debate and was a bit slow in responding to Trumps fire hose of lies, distortions, inanities, and outright fabrications. Now there are some Democrats who, instead of offering some moral chicken soup, have decided that giving Trump what he wants, Biden's departure, is the way to win in November. Be advised that there are many Democrats for whom such rolling over and playing dead is never going to happen; I am among them."
Your posts brought me to DU way back when, and your encouragement invited my participation (such as it is). It just will not be the same without you here. I am forever thankful for your kindness and inspiration. Here's hoping we cross paths elsewhere. I won't say goodbye, but I will say "Thank you." Be well.

(3,865 posts)You are such a strong, articulate voice for reason, for mindfulness and connection. Every time you post here, it is like you have read my mind and are saying with your words exactly what is in my heart and how I feel when I just can't find the words myself and I know I am not alone in this.
Not everyone here is a fool.
I am also dismayed, depressed and feeling nearly hopeless because of the weakness and fear shown by these folks -some of whom should not only know better, but should also know to wait to speak until we all hear from Joe himself- They are fools and tools who call for the best President in my lifetime ( and I am old) to step down after one..ONE debate.
I feel you and I deeply thank you for feeling me. I can only speak for myself or I would have included everyone here who have clearly NOT lost their minds.
Thank you once again for always speaking the truth. But please, please don't leave DU.. You inspire and your voice is needed now more than ever.

(56,326 posts)I also was chagrined (to put it mildly) to read all the Joe must go posts, but I also noticed that a great many of them were by posters I did not recognize.
So, while having a few hours every week awake due to jet lag, I took the time to check a few profiles. The most ardent advocates of Biden dropping outnot all, but a majoritywere either very new members with very few posts, or else long time members with very few posts, i.e. lurkers. Now I know that some long-time lurkers are very much solid DU members who dont post much, for their own reasons. But others seem to wake up out of their deep cover only when disruption seems most effective. Frankly, I suspect the DNC has similar plants on right wing boards. Know what the opposition is thinking. None less than right wing guru and activist (we should still fear him at age 90!) Richard Viguerie told me he firmly believed in doing that.
These plants, both newbies and sleepers, cannot be allowed to control our narrative.
It happens, I have noticed, periodically, and it gets intense every primary season. I even left for several months during the 2016 primary season, when Sanders advocates flooded and dominated DU to the point that they were getting other members postsif they dissented from supporting Sandersalerted on or even deleted. Some remain (the two or three sincere ones, I suspect), but the most ardent of the one-trick ponies left for greener pastures once the nomination was official. The timing was certainly NOT coincidental.
A friend of mine, a name you might remember (Howard Dean), told me this on the subject at hand: I think its overblown by self important pundits. We will know more by the end of next week given the short attention span of the public and the press. Howard is the last person to underestimate the power of self-important pundits, especially if they are great in number and united in purpose. But he also had a pretty good record as DNC chairman when he correctly assessed the benefits of waiting out that short attention span.
It is for that reason, along with the curious pattern emerging in mostgranted, not allof the most fervent advocates of Bidens withdrawal, that I would plead with you to stick with your long-term friends here, and disregard the drive-by shooters. As with the ones who use cars and real guns, they dont tend to stick around long after doing their damage.

(56,326 posts)Like the "Genocide Joe" crowd, who is now starting to fade, these people will only be active until they or their handlers will feel that their objective has been accomplished, or when no else bothers to engage them. Like Lenin said, a lie, when shouted loud enough and often enough becomes the truth. Göbbels picked up on that, too (he was a good socialist before he became a National Socialist). They can shout all they want here. I didn't buy Trump's "sleepy Joe." I didn't buy the Hamas "Genocide Joe." I don't buy the "feeble Joe" now, either.

(11,531 posts)DU is experiencing some division now, but please think about a short respite from here and come back later. Many of us feel the same waythat Biden has been an excellent president and is being shoved out of the race by the media. I have made comments on articles in both the NYT and the Post pointing out their hypocrisy. Biden had one bad night. Trump makes no sense at most of his rallies and talks in gibberish often enough to be noticeable. Add to that his convictions for sexual assault, corporate fraud, and felony convictions for election interference but the media has not once called for Republicans to dump him.
I think Biden can demonstrate over the next couple of weeks that the debate was an aberration. Everyone needs to give him that chance. So hang in there, Nance.

(89,635 posts)...but I haven't for a while now.
I feel there have been people deliberately working to depress our participation here and elsewhere. We all saw the deliberate divisions, stoked by whoever, surrounding the Gaza mess. I think those forces are still lurking in Democratic circles and they're no friends of Joe Biden.
Just my opinion about why there's so much resistance from people who are ostensibly regarded as Democrats.
To tell the truth, most of my advocacy from the time I was a teen has seemed like it was against a world of resistance. My advocacy began with the Vietnam War, then the environment, ERA, and then civil rights where I've seen the most virulent resistance, to indifference.
I still feel that resistance from people who identify as Democrats on ALL of those issues and I've taken more than one virtual beating over defending those, even here. It's been good here, and very bad here, and then okay again.
Now, in this Trump disturbed era, a lot of the wanton attacks he demonstrated have inspired some on our side to react with the same disregard for truth or even the longtime interests of our party, I believe.
Then there's the abandoning of the party and supporters that happens these days with people who are supposed to represent what we're fighting for as Democrats, all for some political nonsense ginned up by the media. People digging their feet into the ground to stand against Democrats on something or the other as if they need to tear the party down just to make it happen for themselves.
I was so hoping we could have you along for this fight, but I do understand not wanting to endure watching people run down the party's prospective, incumbent, nominee.
I do think it should shake out soon. But, right now so many people identifying as Democrats are trying to undo our votes, second-guessing our votes FOR US.
They need to be told. I'm so very sorry that you can't hang with us for that, but I understand. Don't be too sad. You're a good person, and you deserve to feel secure and supported in what you believe.

With that said, I too, have been weaning myself from my time at DU though I am loathe to "miss" breaking info since I have limited news access otherwise. It's damaging to our psyches, individually and collectively... some of us handle it better than others.
This next four months will be the test of our resolve to remain a democracy, it will take everything we have in us to keep it and avoid having nothing less than tatters left come next year. I'm not looking forward to this next several months either.
Please consider taking a vacation, come back after the election or at least after this dark cloud moves out to sea. I would even consider begging but....
We are being flooded by trolls, bots, sleeper trolls and everything imaginable to disrupt and upset us such that we fight amongst ourselves, the debate was a strategic blow that landed pretty squarely on the mark. Once we get beyond this, and it will take at least until after the convention, to be marching in one direction as a force of we the people energy but I see it happening. It just won't be pretty getting there as we can see. I hope we all can remember this as we go on.
We love you, Nance, and your wisdom that you share with us even in this post. I understand your reasoning and need to step back, it's kind of dangerous here right now, but I hope you will return when things calm down and we can act more civilly toward each other again. It was expected that there would be new members who were trolling to behave in that manner, it comes with the territory and in the past they would have be out on their asses in no time. But for some reason things were different this time and they and their nasty posts not only were not taken down but they kept growing in number. Add to that some of the long time members with high post counts chiming in and agreeing with those calling for President Biden to step aside. It was beyond disgusting and those people should really think about the harm they are causing not only to our party but to our democracy. People who are on the fence about who to vote for see that kind of garbage and it can influence how they vote and not in a way that we want.

Changing horses at this point will surely result in our loss. Given the ammunition placed on the table by Joes debate performance, we may still lose, but it gives us our best shot at victory. A switch places 2,000 pound bunker busters on the table above.
What would be really great and improve our chances is if ALL Democrats rally around Joe and face our very real enemies with grace, strength, and dignity.

(11,010 posts)I will be damned if I don't resist the "Biden must go" narrative and thus contribute to normalizing it.
Keep speaking up every opportunity you have at your disposal, no matter how futile it might seem. Leaving the conversation is not much better than agreeing with the "Biden mus go" bullshit.

(861 posts)Ditto all of the above.
You are one of the best writers in the place! I am awed with your command of the English language, your understanding of what's going on, and your persuasiveness.
Unfortunately, it's the loudmouth and vocal contingent that's beating the "replace Joe" drum; the overwhelming majority know that he's our man. Don't let them get you down!!!
This is the place for us on the left ! We all have to inspire each one to reach one, and be sure that everyone gets out to to vote and crush those that wish to end our democracy!

In my opinion, it was what I thought when coming here to read the various reactions. At first, the overwhelming negativity just hit me right in the heart.
I didnt want to be around anyone who didnt support President Biden. I wanted to bolt!
But, I realized that my resolve to look past the media bullshit, and past the crap being written here was strengthened by the fact that President Biden isnt weak, or old, or demented or whatever shit people are throwing out there about him.
He is my choice for the job of running this country. Hes a Statesman, a man of integrity, and one fine human being. He has decades of experience to handle the affairs of the country.
If you go, I wish you well.
But, your voice, your thoughts, and your support would be terribly missed. Terribly missed
Thank you for all of your posts. Ive always read what you had to say and I hope you will reconsider leaving.

(15,015 posts)that DU has been under coordinated attack for a long time. We are just seeing it flare up again. The intent is to divide us and weaken an effective and free think tank and vibrant discussion board. They would only succeed if they drive out effective posters, the ones who understand that words and ideas can be formidable weapons. The more effective the poster driven away, the greater the benefit to the fascist authoritarian movement.
So take all the time you need, but please consider returning. Your voice is needed now more than ever. And I think the dust is gradually settling, and we are beginning to see the situation as it is, a precipice between freedom and autocracy.

(9,321 posts)I haven't read any "Joe must go" OP's but that doesn't that it's not happening. It must be happening since you're not the only one that has mentioned this dilemma. Quite a few responses in this thread have mentioned that the posters have long time accounts with low post counts.
I use the tools that DU provides such as full ignore, words and phrases in the trash can and I trash threads. I must have everything aligned just so that I can't see it.
Politics can be stressful, especially when we're facing threats to our Democracy. If you need to, take some time off DU and come back when you're ready. I know that you recently took some time off awhile ago. Sometimes we need take breaks for our own inner peace. Sometimes I utilized the tools provides for my own inner peace. I have the image stored on my PC and I look at it frequently. It also applies to DU.
I don't comment much in the GD, although I want to let you know that you're appreciated here. Do what you need to do, please come back when you're ready.

(16,301 posts)You don't have to post or read DU if you are struggling. We all know that you will support and vote for Democrats in whatever way you think is helpful. What you must do is what is best for you, and only you can know that. There have been times when I just had to stay away from reading DU for quite some time because it was affecting my mental and emotional health. My go-to when finding myself in a dark place like that is nature, books and music. I do a complete news avoidance. I always come back to DU when things settle down and I'm sure I can keep my sanity once again.
The last thing we need is for you to disappear altogether. So, take as much time as you need. We're not going to say goodbye to you.

(2,612 posts)You and I don't know each other, but I want to offer you my perspective on what's been happening on DU lately.
There are very few profiles promoting these ugly attacks against our Democratic president. But they are VERY vocal. They post negativity repeatedly and seem compelled to relentlessly carry on railing against every comment made to them, without good faith that they have even considered someone else's opinion, and/or just spew ugly snark.
They don't respond to the reality that President Biden IS our Democratic leader, our nominee who was VOTED FOR. Apparently some profiles are totally comfortable disenfranchising American citizens who have already voted for President Biden in the primaries. They won't acknowledge that FACT.
Personally I think these profiles are grandstanding and probably yukking it up at how they can elicit reactions from others. One in particular turns around and plays victim and threatens reporting when it seems like it's not fun anymore.
My suggestion to you, don't go. Don't let them drive you away. BLOCK THEM. TRASH THREADS. Getting into people's heads and fucking around inside is the sick twisted goal.
Please stay. There are more of us than there are of them, of that I am sure.

(5,760 posts)if in fact you DO leave.
I don't say that with any pride, and I certainly don't want anybody to leave over my opinion, but I don't say it with one ounce of guilt, either.
I am quite accustomed to being outnumbered. I have tried to be respectful in my dissenting minority, just as I have been since the day I realized I was an atheist, over 65 years ago.
I have also explained WHY I want Joe Biden to step aside. It has NOTHING, whatsoever, to do with disrespect. I respect the man immensely, I admire him immensely. But after the debate performance, where his biggest task was to convince the American public that his age won't prevent him from doing a stellar job, I just don't think he can win this election. He failed. Do I think he would give us another great four years? I certainly do. Do I think he will win the election? Sadly, no, although I hope I'm wrong.
I haven't seen a single thread on this site that trashes Joe Biden, despite what others might say. I don't trash him either.
If wanting a different candidate means I'm "throwing him under the bus", well, I guess I'm throwing him under the bus.
I don't agree that we owe Joe Biden any vote out of loyalty. We don't owe Joe Biden a thing. As a politician he OWES US. That's just the nature of the beast, and while it's true that his administration has been one of the most successful in my lifetime, this vote is about what's ahead, not about what's behind us. And if I believe he won't win, as I do, then I'd just be wasting my vote so I want a different choice. The cause is bigger than any one man, no matter how great we all think he is.
I must say, it's pretty interesting to see what has saddened you lately about this site. The most saddening aspect for me lately is how some have tried to bully and curse others, often with foul language, and often to applause.

(31,441 posts)those of us who still support our POTUS and presidential nominee suddenly feel like we're the ones in a foreign land. (2,093 posts)wrong, but isn't this a debate forum where we discuss Democratic policy and strategy?
I don't see any posts bashing on President Biden (well, I saw a few but those were trolls or something that didn't last very long), I've only seen those who are concerned about our strategy and path to victory in November. They are rightfully concerned about the landscape right now and the unfortunate opportunity this has given the jackass. None of us want him in charge, and others are scared enough to consider this Biden replacement talk, even as flawed as the idea may be. We are supposed to be here to talk some sense into those folks, not call them names or quit altogether. We attract bees with honey, not manure.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's helpful at all to be singing the mass media song about replacing Joe Biden, but I'm here to talk about things and share thoughts. Many posts here insult Christianity multiple times per day and I'm not quitting because of it, I speak out. I'm here to debate and defend my position on such matters, and supporting Joe Biden is one of the positions I am here to defend right now. We do that by starting to talk about Biden/Harris POLICY, and get the word out to as many people as we can get to read it. And even though this forum is a collection of people who are already going to vote for Democrats, there is a lot to be said for the google scrapers and spiders right now. Many people get linked here who are not and never will be members, but they are searching for information. Our job is to be here posting that information for all to see so they will consider it.

(119,182 posts)sometimes frightening, often depressing, frequently angry-making times. And sometimes, no matter how strong we are, we reach a limit. And when that happens, we hope, and should be able to expect to find in our beloved community, compassion, understanding, and empathy. Not judgment or derision. Some of us have been fighting these damned battles for decades, on the front lines since the 60's in many cases, and we are damned tired.
