Because not for one instant do I want to be accused of disparaging Democrats.
If a Republican candidate had had a bad debate, the first thing out of the gate would have been the entire Party stating that they had clearly and overwhelmingly won the debate no question about it. They would Gish Gallop any commentators who suggested otherwise and would state that a significant rise in the polls was forthcoming as a result.
There would not be a single solitary hint of dissatisfaction with the candidate or the debate performance and it would be full speed ahead redoubled.
We seem to have difficulty going for broke and are characterized as having grace, class, and patriotism. Yeah. Great. Do remember that we barely beat Gerald Ford, an appointed President who had zero charisma, had pardoned Nixon, and we lived through the worst political scandal to date with constant Republican attempts to whitewash it, with them giving in only because the tapes came out. They would never ever do that now. It was horrifyingly close all things considered. Did I mention horrific inflation during the Ford Presidency. Remember WIN: Whip Inflation Now? Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
We need to blitz the airwaves and the Net with ads that show Trump saying one of his insanely inappropriate statements and then have a spokesman or even The President himself say Are you effing kidding me? He really said that. Wow
this is just nuts. Or words equivalent. All gloves off
no more debates. Show this sociopath for what he is. No holds barred. Make him a laughingstock.

(22,838 posts)The least we could do now, is to make as loud a ruckus as we can about the sworn affidavit showing that Trump forced 12 year-old girls to engage in threeways with him.
If the shoe were on Biden's foot (perish the thought), Repugs and their media surrogates would make sure even the last villager in Tumbuktu would find out - complete with every imaginable detail (including some fictitious ones).
It would be a red-bannered, ominously scored, giant bold-face Farce News ALERT all day - every day.

It's just barely audible...just sounds like the ternsiest of farts.
The way I finally caught it was with the closed captions on. I focused on the captions and watched for the words "too much money" to appear so that I wasn't distracted by what he was saying or Joe's "omg, is he REALLY saying that?" facial expressions, and there it was, a teeny tiny little fart.
So I can now confirm that it is there...just barely. But so what?? I can't stand TSF and my opinion of him couldn't be any lower. But claiming that little tiny sound was evidence of him soiling himself is ridiculous, and fixating on his supposed fecal incontinence is a complete waste of time anyway. We need to keep the focus on all the horrible things about him that make him completely unfit to be president and a danger to everything this country has ever aspired to be.
I'm actually a little embarrassed that I put that much time and energy into trying to hear that teensy expulsion of gas. But I'm not sorry I did, because I can now speak with confidence about how truly and utterly insignificant it was.
I'm amazed at the way this is being blown out of proportion. The guy farted, and like I said already, so what? News flash: People fart. It proves nothing, and it means nothing. End of story.

(24,103 posts)I agree that it's more important to zero in on Trump's words, actions, and incompetence.
But think about this. Trump's mic was near his face. He is a tall man. His butt was far away from the mic, on the other side of his body. Yet the mic picked it up. So, for people present, it must have been LOUD.
Given all that, was Biden's facial expression due to Trump's words or to the sound coming out his butt? Or the smell? Maybe we should say that Biden got methane gassed by Trump.
Also makes me wonder about that well known pic of Zelenskyy with Trump, giving Trump the side eye.

(18,404 posts)Sorry to pour cold water on this, but all I heard was a very brief, barely audible fart. I had to play the video several times to even catch it at all.
I think it's quite a reach to say that this is evidence that he soiled himself. All it proves is that the guy farted at a somewhat inopportune time.
I agree that he was spewing gibberish. He obviously didn't have an answer for the question about opioid addiction, so he gish galloped about China until his time ran out. Shame on him for that. But pooping his pants? Insufficient evidence.

(7,195 posts)How is it possible that we are supposed to worry about Biden taking 2 am phone calls bot not worry about having Trump, who, well into the COVID pandemic suggested getting disinfectants into your body. He did this in public to prove how much smarter he was than the scientists at the CDC and FDA, who were right there. He knew he could say anything and get away with it.
It is astounding to me that anyone could fall for this BS, much less amplify it.

GISH GALLOP
I will go find it and edit it on this post...
GISH GALLOP
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gish gallop (/ˈɡɪʃ ˈɡæləp/) is a rhetorical technique in which a person in a debate attempts to overwhelm an opponent by abandoning formal debating principles, providing an excessive number of arguments with no regard for the accuracy or strength of those arguments and that are impossible to address adequately in the time alloted to the opponent. Gish galloping prioritizes the quantity of the galloper's arguments at the expense of their quality.
Name origin
The term, "Gish gallop", was coined in 1994 by anthropologist Eugenie Scott, who named it after American creationist Duane Gish. Scott argued that Gish used the technique frequently when challenging the scientific fact of evolution.[1]
Strategy
During a Gish gallop, in a short space of time the galloper confronts an opponent with a rapid series of specious arguments, half-truths, misrepresentations, and outright lies that makes it impossible for the opponent to refute all of them within the format of the debate.[2] Each point raised by the Gish galloper takes considerably more time to refute or to fact-check than the amount of time taken to state each one in the series. This technique is known online [3] as Brandolini's law and frequently is referred to as "the bullshit asymmetry principle". That element of the technique also is referred to as spewing a firehose of falsehoods.
********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
The technique wastes an opponent's time and may cast doubt on the opponent's debating ability for an audience unfamiliar with the technique, especially if no independent fact-checking is involved or, if the audience has limited knowledge of the topics.

(5,437 posts)a knife fight using logical appeals pointing to our good policies and the good economy. The media will damn all of that with faint praise on a 24/7 basis if they mention it at all. For example you see all kinds of reports interviewing people who are "struggling" with inflation (nearly all that inflation is corporate greed) but you won't see reports about those who have seen way better wages and job offers and the positive effects for them.
The big media has it's chosen way to go. That direction is a purposeful choice not to show the successes of the Biden administration. There is no reason for us to be civil to the media while candidates and others on our side do media interviews.

(16,301 posts)This is going to have to be done from the grassroots level. We cannot rely on mainstream media. We also have to reach the young voters, so that's not going to be done through newspapers. They don't read newspapers. They don't watch mainstream teevee. They are strictly online, unfortunately sometimes way too much, but as much as I am not a Tik Tok fan, or even Facebook or X whatever it is, that's where we'll reach the younger generations.

(22,648 posts)It is not just blockwalking, phone banking or literature drops. Postcard parties. Donate $$ for supplies (especially postage). Host small gatherings of Democrats and get their help. Your county party can give you lists of folks to contact to help get out the vote. Network with the grass roots organizations in your county. Volunteer for a campaign. Drive blockwalkers in this oppressive heat.
Go to Postcards to Swing States and get some postcards. I have a batch for Texas, with a list for mailing. Write a short message, and send them off right before early voting starts. I can't believe Texas is on the list but it is. The cards are classy and beautiful; voters will notice them.
If you live in a swing state, this is very important. If you live in a blue state, get addresses for a swing state.

I think we'll see more republicans come out and be heard, frequently (Bush, Cheney, Ryan, Boehner, former cabinet members, even old guard like McConnell, etc). More public figures. More CEOs. There will be an avalanche of condemnation in the last couple of months. It is that serious.
Now is the time to face the wind!

Finally ask any reporter if they ever went to Epstein's Island? Serious pivot to how no one in the media is talking about the huge Epstein Grand Jury doc drop from back when the Bush Administration basically let Jeffry Epstein get away nearly trouble free after credible accusations about child sex trafficking. That is why the media is attacking Joe Biden, The TurdSlinger is Toast is the Epstein docs get any serious coverage. Plus the Hispanic focus group run by Univision during the debate, moved solidly towards Joe Biden right after the debate.

(59,887 posts)I wonder if part of the reason is that they are also more likely to support
authoritarian, strict "parents". We seem to demand that respect and support be repeatedly earned.
As to how they would have handled a President having a terrible debate, look back to 2004. After a very short, weak effort to say Bush won, the main response was that were not electing a debater, but a President. Then followed by claiming W was an excellent wartime President and Kerry, as a Senator has had decades of debating.
Using this template, but using reality of 2024, the Democrats could have said stressful public debates do not reflect the job of President, a job Biden has done well. Trump, on the other hand, is a show man from a "reality" show.
