Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWow! People are really pissed at the New York Times!
People on Threads were saying that the Times Threads account was deactivated. Then a couple of hours later, they came back. And the people were ready for them and lambasted them with no mercy. First time I checked, there were 2,000 comments, now 3,500 and I'm sure it will continue to grow. I wonder if they'll slink away again...

(42,524 posts)Editors are a bit less conservative, and reporters lean liberal. Op-ed commentators tend to be a mix, but lately is seems the NYT has gone totally MAGA on its editorial page.
Readers tend to be liberal just because liberals like to be well informed, and for some, especially in smaller cities, the NYT and WaPo are the best source of international print news easily available to them

(22,883 posts)The implication behind the use of the term is that instead of a "true" or "natural" grassroots effort behind the activity in question, there is a "fake" or "artificial" appearance of support.

(36,631 posts)From the jargon file:
astroturfing: n.
1. The use of paid shills to create the impression of a popular movement, through means like letters to newspapers from soi-disant concerned citizens, paid opinion pieces, and the formation of grass-roots lobbying groups that are actually funded by a PR group (AstroTurf is fake grass; hence the term). See also sock puppet, tentacle.
2. What an individual posting to a public forum under an assumed name is said to be doing.
This term became common among hackers after it came to light in early 1998 that Microsoft had attempted to use such tactics to forestall the U.S. Department of Justice's antitrust action against the company. The maneuver backfired horribly, angering a number of state attorneys-general enough to induce them to go public with plans to join the Federal suit. It also set anybody defending Microsoft on the net for the accusation You're just astroturfing!.
An example of "stealth marketing" by some pretty big names, and EFF came to the rescue of the one who uncovered it...
https://www.spankmymarketer.com/
In this case, it is clear that some in the media have promoted a movement that doesn't have the kind of support they want us to believe.

(9,249 posts)would be to slow this trend of generational overindulged rich brats who don't grow up with ANY sense of responsibility to anyone but themselves and inherit money they never earned. It has stifled innovation in this country to the point of madness, and fostered an un-American aristocracy.
Because it takes the benefits of a society to allow for the amassing of huge fortunes, society needs to send a bill to those who exploit the rest for their obscene profits.

Not going to happen - their leadership would rather pull the plug on their outlet.
Rupert Murdoch did that in the UK 'News of the World'.
Closure of the News of the World happened on 10 July 2011, after 168 years of publication.

(1,385 posts)And it is so comforting and hopeful to see so many people standing up for Biden and letting these pundits and commentators know how we feel. I've been feeling so helpless lately just seeing all the negative articles and thinking that if they have their way, we're going to lose our best chance of beating the orange monster. Now, I feel like I'm doing something to help in my own small way and am down in the trenches with my fellow Democrats, fighting the bad guys!

(8,185 posts)They simply put forward one view and try to shape peoples' thinking, or get support from people who already think along their pushed lines.
People have no trouble thinking of Pravda as a propaganda tool, but don't do so with American media outlets.
Why would that be?

(10,925 posts)I told them it was over their coverage of the Presidential election.
They tried to offer me a deal.
Told them I can't give a nickel to people doing what NYT has been doing.
I also gave them crap because they turned off the ability for me to cancel my subscription in my account.
I had to spend 10 minutes on the phone with them to end it.
Good riddance.
Sadly, losing the media like this makes it tougher for Democrats to win.
