FREEZE!

It is necessary for us and President Biden and crew to realize that a large part of this country and indeed the world is living often in a state of freeze of something very close to it.

When the nervous system is over-stressed, to the point of breaking or overload, then the prey animal sinks to its knees and kind of knocks itself out. So that doom doesn't feel so bad or so that a predator might lose interest and go away or lose guard and then escape is possible.

When we disassociate, space out, trance out, daydream, think of something new and even meditate or relax deeply, these can be close cousins to a sense of freeze.

Freeze is not the enemy. It is a natural state, a part of our biological make-up. As mentioned before, extreme states of bliss can be found in a kind of emptiness or non-doing, non-saying, and even on-being.

However, hanging out in freeze too long or at critical junctures is definitely a recipe for disaster.

The Covid pandemic, the onslaught from right-wingers of too much information and disorganizing false information, anything that causes stress or overwhelm is like to lead to overload, which then sinks to its knees in the form of surrender. The more natural progression of nervous system up and nervous system down in a kind of wave sine curve is much more pleasant. Think dolphins playing in the waves. That's how it is supposed to be. Hitting over-stress and then hitting freeze feels more like the jagged shower scene in the classic movie Psycho.

Even breathing follows this rhythm. Breathing in is nervous system activation. Breathing out is de-activation. Instead of convincing people with anxiety to breathe in, it might be better to make sure they breathe out fully.

We really will do will to reassure people, take them out of so much stress, give them solid data to go by, assure them that we care, speak honesty, forthrightly, simply caringly.

Too much is too much. Feeling better is better. And simplicity is very reassuring.

This is particularly true for the young. This is an audience we truly need to reach for this election. And they are, from what I see, way tuned out and not in the know. This is something to be worked on.

It's helpful for everyone to work their way out of freeze to positive constructive action.

I use that technique when I substitute teach and have trouble with class behavior or a disruptive student. I go silent and breath and refocus without losing my temper. And then move on.

Are all ways in which we try to escape a threat or cope with trauma.
