Best approach to "I'm not into politics" Americans?

Seems to be a very common response to politics discussions when I am out and about.

What do DUers see as the best response to people with this attitude?

If it’s a brief moment, and they are obviously turned off by any other discussion, I let it go. No sense aggravating them.

If it is a part of a larger conversation in which they complain that their vote has no impact, I tell them that’s exactly what some people want them to think. If they complain about the government, I tell them their non vote was a vote for the policies they dislike.

The problem with that is that people who don't do politics don't know any real issues, other than what media fixates on.

Then I question whether they really don’t do politics, but I haven’t had an experience where someone who does that. Usually they will engage. Doesn’t mean the conversation will be fruitful for either of us, but at least we can try to talk.

At a bar or beauty salon - that's what I say.

But I'm super political. Sometimes I just don't want to discuss things.

I also get stopped a lot for local politics - and that might have something to do with my aversion to national politics. I can speak to you for hours about sidewalks, gas/water/sewage pipes, road construction, traffic studies, bonding for ibank loans, blah blah blah.

And that you'd rather watch football than engage in the business of good civics tells me EXACTLY what's wrong with this country. That said, I'm happy to watch the game, get a good buzz on and ignore the ass you're about to make of yourself.'

That conversation usually happens AFTER they start bitching about politics, and they decide they want to go back to the game rather than keep a reasonable conversation going.
Finding the closet liberals (even on the singular topic they care about) in a red state sports bar, does take some work. It's usually worth it for a shared bucket after the fact...

And politics is about choosing & reporting on the people who represent you in government.

that it's important for people to know, and be involved especially with my LGBTQ+ friends and acquaintances whether or not they will have rights in the future. I talked to one fellow Trans woman who is planning to move from Ohio to here in Indiana and I pointed out that, politically, Indiana is not very good (right wing red state) but she stated that she just cared about the scenery and that she didn't much care about politics. And then I told her what I said above and she sort of changed her tune and stated that she was going to be voting in November.

That only shows you are living a good life in a country where you can be that comfortable to ‘not care’.
I only want you to thank the people that did care about politics and gave you this wonderful free country.

Voting for fascists isn't going to protect us from fascism.

So, simply requesting that people vote isn't enough.

It's voting for democracy and against fascists that is THE priority.
