Democrats are in crisis at the moment, divided over whether President Biden should stay in the race after his disastrous debate last month or clear the way for another, younger candidate.
Bidens shaky performance raised concerns about whether he can win in November, and prompted calls from prominent Democrats, columnists and others for him to step aside. Its up to the Democratic Party to sort this out. But its time to refocus attention on the only candidate in the race who is patently unfit for office any office and an imminent threat to democracy: Donald Trump.
Its unbelievable that the nation is spending so much time on the question of Bidens verbal acuity, when the greatest concern ought to be that his challenger is a self-aggrandizing felon and twice-impeached election-denier. Trump fomented the Jan. 6 insurrection, shows contempt for the rule of law and shamelessly lies in pursuit of more power. Hes an authoritarian who admires murderous despots, wants to jail his political enemies and has publicly flirted with declaring himself a dictator on his first day back in office.
With fervent support from the Republican Party, he peddles cruelty, racism and misogyny, demonizing immigrants as poisoning the blood of our country, demeaning womens looks and intelligence, and using disgustingly fascist language to criticize his opponents as vermin. Hes a man who lied about his wealth for years to cheat on his taxes, whose business was convicted of criminal tax fraud, and whos been denounced by many former aides and Cabinet members as a malignant narcissist who recklessly puts himself before the American people.
Trump is the only man in the presidential race manifestly unworthy of holding a position of power, and has no business ever returning to the White House. If the GOP had any decency left, its members would be discussing whether to dump Trump for a candidate who isnt out to bulldoze democratic institutions in favor of autocracy.

I think that some reason is appearing from some in the media. Hopefully we'll see more of this.

(169,765 posts)It's NOT "the nation spending so much time", it's the MEDIA and attention getter reporters, columnists, pundits and politicos who are "spending so much time", do they can get some kind of 15 minutes of fame or generate more clicks and views.
The "nation" is trying to take summer vacations, get kids ready with "back to school" sales that oddly, have already started, and just make it through the day (sadly many dealing with the aftermath of extreme weather). They are NOT obsessing over the Presidency.
Talk about a media bubble world and "echo chamber".

(2,634 posts)I suspect that both the NY Times and LA Times may be facing a significant drop in subscriptions (as well as people questioning why so many Trump operatives are suddenly showing up as editors).

(19,161 posts)I can't remember newspapers ever using as much venom towards the candidate they don't endorse. They're even tossing in terms like "lie" (no sugar-coated "misleading" ), "self-aggrandizing felon", and -- of course -- "unfit (for any office)".
Not that TSF doesn't deserve every disparaging term they can think of, it's just that it reads like pure hatred of the Nazipublican's great orange hope. Good. I hope he breaks both his damned thumbs posting his inevitable response.

(7,790 posts)First, the R's have NO decency... period.
Second, dumping democracy in favor of autocracy is exactly what all the R's want. It's a feature -- not a bug. Why would they replace him? He's the easiest to control, they've discovered. They'd hoped Bush the younger was that person, but turned out Bush actually had his own agenda and the "smarts" and wherewithal to make it happen (sort of). GW's mental problems weren't as amenable to being pushed in the desired direction as T's are.

(8,202 posts)The media & some rich elites are in crisis, not Democrats!
I'm not in crisis. None of the Democrats I know (actual real world voters) are in crisis.
The media is manufacturing a "crisis" because they need clicks, they need views, that advertising money is how they stay in business today.
