Nothing more. The mistakes that Joe makes are "normal" for someone that is aging. He does not have dementia. He has shown that he is very knowledgeable about foreign policy and other complex political issues, even though he misspeaks sometimes. He could not do that with even the slightest case of dementia.
In my opinion, this criticism of Joe is indicative of how many people in this country feel about our aging community. They look at it as some sort of handicap, rather than a reservoir of wisdom and knowledge.
We are a nation that worships youth and its appearance. We spend billions of dollars trying to look younger.
Of course, age does not always bring wisdom. Look at his opponent. He would be more of a candidate for dementia than Joe Biden, in my opinion. He repeats himself all the time. It's like someone pulls a string in his back and he starts talking nonsense. He never discusses serious issues. I do not think it is possible for him to do so.
But, I do think we should honor and show respect to our older citizens. Just because they may stumble over a word on occasion does not mean they are incapable of doing the job.
A lot of this nation is guilty of age discrimination, in my opinion.

(40,980 posts)And hoping that seniors take notice and vote!
With decent health one can do anything in the early 80s.
80 is the new 70 for those who take care of their health.

(8,171 posts)One tremendously positive outcome of the last week or so is that the more people understand how stutterers communicate, the better we can hear Biden's truths through the stammers.

(115,620 posts)But I would take his knowledge of foreign affairs over Donald Trump any day of the week. And this is a time when we need that sort of knowledge.
Feels like we are in an undeclared WWIII. I simply cannot imagine TFG and his goons being in command at this time.

(60,067 posts)Or his tan suit. Or the fact that he walks around on two feet.
It's actually about two other things: first, taxes and the fact that the money hoarders want to hoard more money. Second, old white men not wanting anyone else crashing their unbounded entitlement party.
Those two things are what it has ALWAYS been about, and what it is about now.
Their objection to his age is just a convenient beard for their actual objections.

(5,050 posts)In Corporate America, the oldest employees are often the ones laid off first. Older folks often have trouble finding jobs. Many of us kind of 'slow down' as we age.
There are restrictions/rules for younger folks about when they can drive, when they can marry, when they can enlist, how long they must stay in school, when they are 'adults'.
So I'm not as quick to say 'ageism' about President Biden when it is woven throughout our society.
I'm no Spring Chicken here, many old folks I know are still driving, still making financial decisions, planning and preparing their meals and cleaning their own spaces. Not all of those folks should still be doing all of those things. I think the discussion should have happened long before now about President Biden's age. The main goal now should be to win the 2024 election.
For me, it gets into how comfortable I was with what I saw and heard.
I hope is he planning to mentor someone to run next time in 2028, be a teacher and a guide, share his wisdom with the next generation. He is indeed an elder Statesman.
