I was wrong.

The witness who said he saw a gunman on the roof sounded very credible. From what he said, it seems the Secret Service was slow to react. I thought the Secret Service around Trump seemed nonchalant in the video, but they knew the shooter was dead by that time. Now it looks like the teleprompter may have saved his life. This in no way makes Trump a hero.

I think that the shooter was crawling up the far side of the peaked roof and out of the view of the outer Secret Service detail. Apparently, the outer Secret Service detail hesitated to radio the inner Secret Service detail near the podium until after the shooter fired and then quickly died by gunfire from the outer Secret Service detail.
