(3,484 posts)The bullying estranges the victim. The ones that bullied him in part are responsible. It is done on purpose. Those wounds don't heal easily. The kid was smart and probably why he got attacked for it. No different than getting attacked for gender indenty or what ever difference you want to insert. Targeting clothes or hairstyles are an easy target. Schools need a way to end this. Blaming the victim is wrong. Cliques need busted up at school. There was a experiment with staggering times for groups. That way there was a break up not all the children were there together. For this young man it is now water under the bridge, but it could help others in the future.
PS I expect better from here on DU for making fun how someone chooses to dress.

(928 posts)I was very glad President Biden reached out immediately to former President Trump, by phoning him, and glad that they spoke shortly after this tragedy.

Although Whitman's autopsy revealed a pecan-sized tumor in the white matter above his amygdala, the tumor was not connected to any sensory nerves. Nonetheless, some experts believe this tumor may have contributed to the violent impulses which Whitman had been exhibiting for several years prior to the massacre.[3]: 54 [5]

(60,965 posts)Like yours, my Indiana high school did not have a gun club. Most, maybe all the clubs accepted all kids that signed up. An embarrassing memory is that I seriously considered joining sign painters club in spite of having no artistic skills because I had lots of friends in it ... and had a crush on one of them. There was no thought of being rejected by the club, just that I would be terrible.

(4,135 posts)You would bring in your rifle (generally a .22), lock it in a cabinet at the school range, go to classes, and after school, the cabinet would be unlocked, and then the club would have their practice. My school used to have archery during PE at least until about '79 or so.

I have a hard time believing this was premeditated; there's no way he could have known that rooftop would be accessible and unsecured, quite the opposite ("An elevated position inside of 200m with a clear line of sight, no way you're getting there!"
, I'd guess he decided on the spur of the moment to grab the rifle and go out in a blaze of glory, when he got close in and saw the available sharpshooting perch he figured "why the hell not?"
But that's just my 2¢

We'll probably never know what happened.

(2,047 posts)Even if we might think that makes a good story.
Mental illness is blamed way to often for shootings. Most shooters get away clean and we know NOTHING of their mental health. Only about 38% of gun killings are ever solved as to killer. Making stereotypes when 70% of the data is missing is something of a statistical problem.
BOTH of Crooks parents were mental health providers (although it's unclear to me what credentials they currently held). I kinda, sorta, want to believe that educated, experienced psychological advisors like his parents would have recognized an outstanding problem with their son.
But then he may have been lost among the chaff. 20% of persons in the US experience mental disorders every year. Of that percent less than 1% ever end up in therapy, due to costs, access issues, or repulsion to seek therapy by the disordered. So we can't completely discount the possibility that Crooks successfully hid his problems. Many tens of millions of Americans do that every year.
A 1 in 5 chance that he had a mental disorder makes the meaning of any guess pretty hollow. A huge number of Americans, millions upon millions, have mental disorders every year. We don't have millions upon millions of people gunned down.
Rather less than 6% of known mentally disordered ever commit an act of violence such as hitting or grabbing a person. and much much less than 1% of know mentally disordered shoot someone.
