(75,210 posts)There is at least one in every town. Most don't kill people. Some become school shooters. Others have other targets.

(5,603 posts)Such kids are often bullied for being considered "weird". Interestingly his father is a psychologist, who would have recognized that. Both parents are reported to be Democrats btw, which probably explains the Act Blue contribution from the 17 year old living at home. Kid is reported to have had a falling out with his father a year later at age 18 which resulted in him leaving the family home. He broke with his parents politics to become a Republican around that time as he went first to live with his grandparents and then on his own as officially an adult. Kid almost certainly not well mentally.

(234 posts)Im.plenty old enough to know I saw Kids in high school with shotguns in trucks l, and I'm from Appalachia and know nearly every single boy has a .22 single shot for squirrel/rabbit hunting by the age of ten
Firearms have always been readily available

(33,972 posts)first with bb guns and then shotguns (well my brother did that, I wasn't really interested). But my brother was also not unstable or a loner. Did a great job on the gun safety course my dad made him take in our county (we were in the rural midwest)
But shotguns are different from AR-15's. I'm not convinced everyone needs high-power weapons to hunt/guard their homes. Up close you can do a lot of damage with a shotgun, and pistols are easier to use in tight spaces.

(234 posts)Born and raised,.six years in the infantry
Guns in this area are generally respected because this has been taught by the generation before us.
I know this is not everywhere,.but here they policed themselves in the form of parental teaching and thrashings if that didn't work lol

(5,603 posts)constantly attacking, mocking and belittling everyone from McCain to the disabled. Perhaps the kid was trying to strike Trump as a symbol of the biggest bully out there. In some ways Trump is the model for modern day bullies in America.

(30,128 posts)The fact that he had graduated two years earlier is irrelevant. He was traumatized from being bullied. The Aztec HS shooting in New Mexico a few years ago was a boy who had graduated three years earlier and went back to the HS and killed two kids before being killed. Bullying in school scars kids for life.
Seems this kid wanted to kill himself by killing someone important so everyone would know who he was. Just like most of these types of shootings. I doubt this was political in nature.
I suspected as much last night with this post: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100219151386

(6,653 posts)Except with the D&D group I hung out with. Was never messed with (and neither were them when they were with me), but of course I was six ft. and my father ran a construction company and would drag me out of bed on Saturdays, holidays, etc. as free labor so I was very muscular as well. I was tossing 100 pound kegs of tar at 14. So that may have had something to do with it.
Was also very socially dense, looking back I often think, "oh, she was flirting with me".
