She was elected to the House of Representatives.

If you don’t spend an adequate amount of time representing a majority of the people in your district—or, at the very least, a majority of the people of your own party in your district—your chances of being defeated in the next election increase. Disappoint a majority of the members of your own party in your district, your chances of defeat go up exponentially, as the chances of losing the primary go up dramatically. Many House and Senate seats are considered safe, once incumbency has been established, but they are by no means lifetime appointments. Carl Hayden was an exception, not the rule.
