19. I was just reading a little - he grew up in Ohio so not sure about Appalachia

that must be further back. He was protestant/evangelical growing up (mostly with his grandparents). He has had name changes (the mom re-marrying - he ultimately chose her last name) and then the conversion to Catholicism as an adult. I'm not sure where that came from, as he met his wife in law school and she's Hindu. The remainder I learned - honors graduate at Ohio State, Yale Law School. And now here he is, first millennial on a major ticket. If his bio dad and mom were from Appalachia that explains his hillbilly book, but it doesn't look like that was his immediate story. I'm sure he knows enough to lay it on thick though.
