The Democratic National Committee is quietly moving ahead with plans to formally nominate Joe Biden as the partys presidential candidate weeks before the Democratic national convention next month, according to a report.
Democratic bosses are moving to kill off efforts to force Biden from the partys presidential ticket by rushing ahead with plans for convention delegates to vote electronically in a week-long roll call starting in late July, Axios reported.
If a majority of the 4,000 delegates back Biden, it will make his candidacy technically unchallengeable when the convention starts on 19 August.
The move comes while the rebellion triggered by last months debate fiasco which prompted multiple calls from within the party for Biden to be replaced as the candidate has stalled following Saturdays failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Under the plan, the electronic vote would probably start on 29 July and end on 5 August, meaning Biden will in effect secure his candidacy if he can survive the mutiny for another two weeks.

(23,638 posts)But the primary reason for doing it is because if they don't, Biden won't be on the Ohio ballot. A secondary effect will likely be, as the article states, to "kill off efforts to force Biden from the partys presidential ticket." But that's not why Biden is being nominated early.
This story is from May, before the first Trump/Biden debate.
President Joe Biden will be formally nominated as the Democratic presidential nominee through a virtual roll call ahead of the partys official convention in Chicago in August a maneuver that will allow Biden to appear on the November ballot in Ohio.
The Democratic National Convention, where the president would otherwise be formally nominated, comes after Ohios ballot deadline of Aug. 7. The partys convention is scheduled for Aug. 19-22.
Ohio lawmakers have moved the deadline in the past for candidates of both parties, although they had not done so yet for Biden this year and were called to a rare special session by Gov. Mike DeWine to address the issue.

(12,120 posts)Once he is our official candidate that should shut the naysayers up, at least some of them. Then the real issues can be discussed without President Biden always having to answer those stupid questions about whether or not he will step down. That is just a distraction and a big waste of time.

(94,289 posts)In May, the D.N.C. changed its process to nominate Mr. Biden to accommodate an Aug. 7 deadline to place him on the ballot in Ohio. Lawmakers in that state later passed legislation to push the deadline back to the end of August, but it does not take effect until Sept. 1. The Biden campaign and the D.N.C. aimed to have Mr. Bidens nomination locked up before Aug. 7 to avoid the possibility of a legal challenge by Ohio Republicans.
