I've always thought that getting freshair to a wound is part of healing.
I'm not suggesting he get his ear filthy or subject it to rough handling. I'm just saying it wasn't a huge wound, and keeping it dry and in fresh air isn't wrong.

(7,309 posts)If he got stitches, as alleged, they should be open to air by now and if they are worried about infection, a little antibiotic ointment like mupirocin.
If it is an open wound, then yes, it should be covered.

(2,047 posts)is the growth of skin over the open lesion considered the beginning of healing?
Obviously I don't really understand what "until healing begins" means
Thanks.

(8,894 posts)scabbing actually delays healing.
Checking things out from reliable sources online and from what I already knew, I kept my wound clean and covered, first under melolin and tape (while it was still bleeding and oozing a whole bunch), then progressed to ordinary plasters. We happened to have some US OTC triple antibiotic ointment in the house, so I used that the first few times I changed the dressing. For dirty tasks while the wound was still open, I added a finger cut off a nitrile glove as an extra barrier.
Eventually, once it had stopped oozing and the skin had gotten well on the way to contracting to close the gap and I judged it was ready, I left it open to the air and a small scab formed. That sloughed off along with some dead, corny skin within a few days.
As of now, there's nothing to see of the injury, but it still feels a little odd and tender.
