(2,047 posts)I respect Grant. He's really an icon of a small failing nobody of a man rising to a challenge that demanded his greatness. And HE DELIVERED!
Imagine... a Military academy grad stuck on the west coast doing, well nothing more than drinking. And then in lonlieness and dispair returning to his father in laws store to provide for his wife and family. And THEN, with all odds against the guy who graduated at the bottom of his class, he sees the solution to the siege of Vicksburg, and to victory in Virginia and so salvation of the Union!
God Bless Him! And I hope for many more to follow in his path. We will surely need them soon.

(1,501 posts)Believe it or not, in those days (at least by the standard of the times) the Repubs were the good guys and the Dems the bad guys. I wonder what he would have made of the modern inversion.

He has been unfairly maligned by historians of a certain sort, but he was very much an essential President, understood in his times as a great American both here and abroad. He was the first American President to tour the world after leaving office and was feted and honored throughout Europe and Asia.
