Kamala Harris addresses abortion rights, Trump shooting in Michigan visit
Portage Vice President Kamala Harris warned a Michigan crowd Wednesday that abortion rights are on the ballot in November and addressed the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in some of her first public remarks on the Saturday shooting.
The California Democrat, whose recent visits to Michigan have focused almost exclusively on abortion rights, took the stage for roughly 30 minutes Wednesday inside Portage's Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Museum, perched near large signs saying "Michigan for Biden-Harris" and "Trust Women."
She warned that a Trump-JD Vance ticket and the prospect of a national abortion ban would endanger the abortion rights Michigan residents enshrined in their state constitution in 2022.
"There is something very basic about this in terms of who we are as Americans and our founding principles, which include a founding principle that we believe in freedom, Harris said during a roundtable discussion with Michigan resident Amanda Stratton and Olivia Troye, a former national security official in the Trump administration.
"If we, this year of our lord 2024, have a state of being where the government can tell you what to do with your body, I mean the most basic of things you should have control over? Everybody better watch out about what other freedoms you're taking for granted," Harris said.
