(256,709 posts)And I remember those telephone conversations! When I was a kid and I went on a plane with my Dad to visit my grandmother, there were recordings on the seats that we could listen to - and the one I chose was Bob Newhart on the phone!

My whole family loved this show. It was part of the great Sat. night line up.

(5,759 posts)while driving back from the eclipse, we listened to his audiobook memoir, "Hi, Bob!" In it he tells his story while chatting with other comedians. If you can find it, it's a great way to spend a few hours.

(90,305 posts)Bummer.
His versatility, from stage headliner to Everyman character actor, theyll be known and loved for a L-O-N-G time. He made clean, and deadpan, cool.
Good grief but my husband and I LOVED The Bob Newhart Show. It was appointment television with Mary Tyler Moore. Saturday nights at 9 and 9:30pm on CBS, I think it was.
I tend to find humor in the macabre. I would say 85 percent of me is what you see on the show. And the other 15 percent is a very sick man with a very deranged mind, he said during a 1990 interview with Los Angeles magazine.

(2,157 posts)The last show of his second sitcom series was the best. RIP Bob! You were a brilliant and talented man. ( I on the radio this afternoon that it was Newhart's wife that came up with the idea for the ending! Clearly Bob surrounded himself with exceptional people.)

RIP, Bob. Thanks for all the laughs over the years. You will be missed.

(5,351 posts)To his first sitcom. Per the show script, they were "living" in Chicago in a highrise on north Sheridan Road. Having grown-up in Chicago I loved the show and all the sights in this intro.

(9,513 posts)was an encapsulation of what modern American adulthood was: walking city streets, taking public transportation, going home to an apartment.
The shows that preceded it in that CBS lineup -- All In the Family, Maude, The Jeffersons, Mary Tyler Moore -- all had that same urban vibe. I thought it seemed apparent that was the aspiration.
