This conflation of religion and politics, the draw to authoritarianism, the devotion to one person, unusual beliefs and social isolation all meets qualifications for cult status.
And I think Woodruff's anecdote about GOP delegates saying there needed to be room for more people of different faiths in the public square doesn't jibe with what their party has done or the plans they have via Project 2025.
Also, when they told Woodruff they now prefer abortion legality to be decided on a state-by-state business, it doesn't say what they believe it does. The change -- from preferring national ban to a state decision -- is solely one of political expedience aimed at removing a key Democratic Party appeal. Their rapid willingness to sacrifice their previously established beliefs to appease Trump is indicative of their cult status.

(44,738 posts)It started with owning Africans as Slaves to fuel the souths economy. Today conservatives want to enslave women with their zealotry while their churchs enjoy a tax exempt status. The electoral college was born out of states rights.
Do away with the separation of Church and state and turn loose the assessors. Many large Churchs with large congregations feel no need to abide by the separation now. But love the tax exempt status. Do away with the electoral college, rely on one person one vote and there will be no need for electors fake or otherwise. Hard work, yes.
