Meta CEO says Trumps spirit and fight help explain why hes so popular

Mark Zuckerberg said that former President Donald Trumps immediate reaction after being shot was badass and inspiring, and helps explain his appeal to voters. Seeing Donald Trump get up after getting shot in the face and pump his fist in the air with the American flag is one of the most badass things Ive ever seen in my life, the Meta Platforms Inc. chief executive officer said Thursday during an interview at the companys headquarters in Menlo Park, California. On some level as an American, its like hard to not get kind of emotional about that spirit and that fight, and I think that thats why a lot of people like the guy.
Zuckerberg, 40, declined to endorse Trump or his presumed opponent, President Joe Biden, adding that hes not planning to be involved in the election in any way. Still, his comments add to a growing chorus of Silicon Valley leaders, including Tesla Inc. billionaire Elon Musk and venture capitalists Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, who are warming to the former president, some pledging donations to his campaign. Zuckerberg made the comments during a wide-ranging discussion about the future of AI, social media and more for The Circuit with Emily Chang. The full episode is set to air on Tuesday.
Zuckerberg said Meta is making changes that he hopes will mean Facebook is not as much of a flashpoint in elections going forward. The main thing that I hear from people is that they actually want to see less political content on our services because they come to our services to connect with people. Meta is already recommending less political content to its users, he added. I think youre going to see our services play less of a role in this election than they have in the past.
Zuckerbergs relationship with Trump has been complicated by Trumps use of Metas products to reach his followers. The former presidents posts have routinely contained misinformation or challenged Metas rules. The company suspended Trump from both Facebook and Instagram for two years in the wake of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots. At the time, Zuckerberg posted that Trump was using his account to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor.

(5,674 posts)The photo we've all seen a million times now is perfect Americana and will be one of the ones in the history books.
That kind of moment and image is exactly the kind of thing that sways minds and changes hearts.
Yet - and here is the silver lining - the polls say it isn't happening. There is not much of a bump at all, telling us that Trump is already at his support ceiling. There is too much baggage for even that cinematic moment to change anything.

(7,877 posts)Not to say he wasn't shot at, but he knew his injury was minimal, he was well protected and he heard chatter that the threat was neutralized. There was little to no actual bravery on his part, but there was his base instinct to go for the grift in the moment.
So while actual working class citizens were severely injured and dead, the rich con man who has never known sacrifice and enjoys all the benefits turned the attention on himself to look like the "badass." So, yeah, I guess that is "perfect Americana."

Mr.Bill
(24,579 posts)was to hit the deck. He didn't pump his fist in the air until he was surrounded by SS agents who have sworn to take a bullet for him.
Now badass was Reagan who in his first appearance after getting out of the hospital after being shot had a firecracker go off in the indoor venue he was at. Without hesitation, he said "you missed me" as everyone in the room gasped. He did this without any SS agents near him. (And I'm no Reagsn fan.)

(7,877 posts)He maintained that he was tackled by his Secret Service detail and hit so hard it knocked his shoes from his feet. That was an embellishment designed to make it look like he weathered far more battering than he actually did, to add to the "badass" image that only a rube would fall for.

Excerpt...
Today, a new puppeteer has emerged from the digital realm, Peter Thiel, the tech billionaire whose influence has grown from merely bankrolling campaigns to seeking to install his own protege in the corridors of power. While Thiel is the master puppeteer, he has brought along some of his cohorts. People like Elon Musk, David Sacks, Marc Andreessen, and Ben Horowitz are throwing their considerable wealth and influence behind Trump signaling a seismic shift in Silicon Valleys political allegiances.
This convergence of the valleys right wing with Trump and Vances populist agenda has created a new political force, leaving traditional Wall Street Republicans consigned to the ash heap of history. Thiels masterpiece is J. D. Vance, a candidate molded in Silicon Valleys image, and now poised for the second highest office. This isnt just about having a friend in high places, its about reshaping the government in Thiels vision with Vance as his avatar.
The implications are nothing short of chilling. While Trump blusters about retribution and dismantling institutions, Vance could be the quiet architect of a brave new digital world. An America where surveillance is the norm, where AI-powered weapon systems are unleashed at home and abroad. All rubber-stamped by an administration indebted to techs most controversial figure.
This isnt just about policy, its about American democracy in the digital age. The Trump-Vance ticket with Thiel pulling the strings represents a potential marriage of authoritarian instincts and cutting-edge technology. This is about Thiels long game, a chess match where Vance is both Knight and Pawn. Advancing a vision of America where data is the new oil and democracy is just another system to be disrupted.
The stakes couldnt be higher, and with the backing of Silicon Valleys new conservative Vanguard, Thiels hand has never been stronger. Right before the 2022 elections before J. D. Vance had yet been elected to the Senate from Ohio, I had an opportunity to talk with Bloomberg editor Max Chafkin about his biography of Peter Thiel entitled The Contrarian. Given the events of the past few days, I think it does us all well to listen to that conversation with Max Chafkin about Peter Thiel. Max Chafkin, thanks so much for joining us here on The WhoWhatWhy Podcast.
