the overthrow of the Allende government in Chile in 1973:

This was a military coup against the democratically-elected Chilean president Salvador Allende and his Popular Unity coalition government. It was carried out by a group of military officers led by General Augusto Pinochet. There is strong evidence that the CIA helped facilitate the coup.
