General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI am seeing a lot of resentment today directed at
the Democratic leaders such as Adam Schiff who had a part in pushing President Biden out. And I can understand the emotion here. We love President Biden and we supported him for a second term because he has earned it. But now it won't happen and of course many of us are upset.
But at the same time I don't think we really have much time to be upset. We need to pull the party together in order to fight off Trump in November. I support VP Harris enthusiastically but at the same time I do not believe that this election is going to be a cakewalk. Our country is two divided. I don't think that any Democrat could beat Trump in a landslide and it is going to be close. So I think we need to put our resentments behind us and come together as a party so that we can have a better chance of winning in November.

The past few weeks have been super difficult to navigate with cold calling/knocking.
Now we all feel like idiots, played by the big donors. Not only that but this isnt going to be as easy as people think - the fight to bring out new candidates is going to be very difficult. Im not looking forward to being a front person for that.

Ever again?

(8,683 posts)The past three weeks have been especially difficult on the phones but I just kept at it.
Im 1000% in for all Dems up and down the ticket including Harris but I dont even know what to say at this point. It feels so indefensible how this went down for Biden, Im not at all sure I can put myself on the line at the moment. The inevitable big moneyed special interests pushed him out convos are going to escalate dammit. Theres no way around it.
Yes, new scripts must be crafted but when the whole process has just been smashed, Im not sure I can spin the new spin anymore. Im feeling pretty wary of my own party atm and I wonder if the loudest voices shutting down anyone with apprehension are just keyboard warriors.
Having to interface with actual people on this just got much harder for me at least. Lets hope those who are chastising/rejoicing get into their local campaign offices today, pour their newfound glee and enthusiasm into actual action.

My activism has revolved primarily around repro rights. Even if Harris is the nominee, rich old men dont tend to want to focus on abortion rights. Will she even be allowed to prioritize that?

(128,846 posts)behind the scenes and by whom, it's hard to know to what extent they considered how the voters would feel about it. Millions of people voted for Biden in the primary elections, and it seems that many felt that their choice was being disregarded and bigfooted by wealthy donors - some of whom seemed to be basically bribing congresspeople to withdraw their support. AOC observed that all of them were talking about what their donors wanted and not about what their voters wanted. Regrettably, there has been a loss of trust and damage to the morale of the base, and it will be hard for the politicians to restore that trust. They need to be reminded that without us they won't have jobs, and they have some fences to mend.

(6,892 posts)...Democrats campaigned on the biggest issue, Trump and the threat to democracy, and everything that goes along with that, instead of letting the media choose the narrative and responding on our heels. It's not just Democrats who need to be brought into the coalition to defeat Trump, it is independents, green partiers, moderate Republicans and the perennial couch sitters on election day. But there was some self-centeredness going on, based on a long standing media promoted narrative about Biden's age that blew up after the debate and once again, the narrative got controlled by the media.
I hope Schiff wins, but running in a Senate election against a far right wing, has-been baseball player in California is a landslide waiting to happen. Unfortunately, for President Biden, he has to win voters in places like Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Arizona, where far left wing political rhetoric sounds like communism or being too woke. Our job is to convince people that we can be woke and far left, and equally benefit others wile not threatening anyone. President Biden did a great job at that. The same polls showing voters wanted Biden out showed that 65% want Trump out, that's us and another 35% of the electorate. That's where we win the election. Biden already built that coalition. Now, whoever our candidate is, the responsibility for getting those voters back lies with those who scared them off. Ante up, big donors, you need to fix the hole you made.

(10,829 posts)Schiff's the new Gillibrand. Even though practically the entire Dem caucus - including leadership - were showing Franken the door, people to this day act like Gillibrand was some kind of diabolical mastermind of the entire affair that hypnotized every other Democrat into it.
So it is here. Even though 30+ Congresspeople had come out publicly - and many more were leaking privately - Schiff's going to win the contest for "Who do I take this out on?" for some people. Even though Schiff and Pelosi are extremely tight, and there is zero chance he made a public statement without having a conversation or two with her. Same goes for Zoe Lofgren.
How does Schiff get the special animus when Pelosi, Schumer, and Jeffries were all clearly working this one out behind the scenes?
Because he's a safer target. He's not going to lose his race in California. Attacking leadership is a risky prospect in Democratic spaces.
And you know why I think it's Schiff specifically? Because once he said something, people in denial finally started to realize it was coming. Even if they wouldn't admit it out loud. In the backs of their minds, Schiff was a turning point.
He gets the ire, because he broke the spell.

(15,329 posts)like all of you, I have been very worried about Trump winning. I don't think the downtickets would have lost, but Biden probably would have.
At this point, though I did use the word perfidy, I am ready to forget that and forge ahead. Because now that the whole story has come out, the writing was on the wall with internal polls showing Biden's path to victory had disappeared.
It amazes me how big a man Biden was to do this painful thing. He will go down as a truly great president because he had the character to step down for the sake of all of us instead of his own ego. That selfless act sets an example for all of us. You know, now that I'm thinking about it, Biden's selfless patriotism and genuine goodness, putting us and the republic above his own interest may have won the election for us right there. I don't know many people who won't admire him for it - Americans love selfless patriotism.
As to Harris, we have been glued to MSNBC all evening and this is the first time I've felt good hearing the news in weeks. Fundraising is back up (I donated to the Harris campaign earlier this evening), and she's got endorsements all over the place. See, the whole thing I was afraid of was the party eating its right foot after chopping off its left. Seriously, I had no confidence in the middle aged Dems because I thought there would be a big internacine battle but everybody (except Manchin, who has left our party anyway) got on board with Harris right away, this very afternoon and evening.
Honestly, for the first time since the debate, I am feeling very confident this republic will not fall. And that is a very, very good thing.

(1,742 posts)I'm a grown-ass woman, not stupid, and I'm tired of being told my feelings don't matter. Fuck that shit.
Yes, I'm upset. Yes, I'm sad to see Biden going out this way. But you know what? I am allowed those feelings.
Yes, I'm not happy with how Democratic "leaders" have acted, especially lately. I'm tired of being told they know more than me, and are playing three dimensional chess. Forgive me for remembering how that's worked out for us before. I haven't forgotten Fitzmas. I haven't forgotten the vile things said here about Southerners, either. Or against the poor (hey, just pack up and move to where the jobs are!).
So let's shut the fuck up and stop posting this shit. We're behind our nominee, whoever that may be. And Gods help us if our "leaders" go spineless on us. Again.
So, Harris/her VP choice. It's time to do something other than old white boys, right? We're the liberals, after all. LOL

(17,424 posts)Yes, I am angry at multiple people, including some I've admired, but democracy demands we get our work boots on and get moving. I will donate to people who have made me angry, because I do want them to win their individual races.
Onward.

(4,422 posts)It has to do with people, citizens here, standing up for the process and respecting fellow Democrats. It has nothing to do with Biden earning anything! It has to do with people who could have challenged in a primary but chose to go behind doors with large donors to plan a media campaign to virtually kneecap the man. It has to do with the setting aside of 14,000,000 votes. Enough of this crap. Its done but for gods sake let people talk about what did happen instead of rewriting what went down. We are all moving forward. People who invested in Biden financially are moving forward without refund or return. Let the discussion flow. Hell someone out here didnt even know that TSF was guilty of paying for fake polls. Why is this relevant . because polls were the evidence that Biden should go. The court records tell the story just as the media along with Dem cooperatives made Bidens withdrawal come to be tells its story. People need to understand before we can fully move forward. This is not an undemocratic conversation but a defense of the democratic process!

(25,856 posts)I am terribly upset with the donor classes but they can redeem themselves by supporting Kamala. It is what every single one of us need to go. I am concerned that Illinois has told their delegates not to endorse Harris, that sucks and is one of things I really fear - disunity and chaos. I hope the Kamala momentum is so strong that others who will be interested in running know they need to wait, support Kamala now and bide their time. Speaking to you, Governor Pritzker and any other Dems who might think about challenging her.

(5,127 posts)There is also grief in what was being done to a good man. However, I think he thumbed his nose at the jackasses by endorsing who HE PICKED as his successor to begin with. We all need to remember that, that President Biden PICKED VP Harris to succeed him should the unthinkable happen, and bolstered his choice with this endorsement.
Am I angry? You bet I am. But not at Kamala Harris. She deserves my, and every other Democrat's full throated support.

(7,566 posts)but I refuse to tear down any specific Democrat in any way. I'll even donate to my Congressman, who was one of the first dozen to tell Biden to withdraw.
Joe Biden made a choice to step down, he is not attacking fellow Democrats. Kamala Harris will sooon be our candidate.

(67 posts)Any Democrat can beat drumpf in a landslide. Biden said it himself when asked. He said about 50 other Democrats could beat drumpf.
Democrats have to stop making lists, and calling others who oppose fascism "traitors", and take their own advise from a week ago, and "shut and get in line", and stop "being bedwetters". Keep that same energy now!
VOTE BLUE NO MATTER WHO!
Remember, Democracy is on line! Line up behind the Democrats candidate to beat drumpf, and vote! Biden showed us it's not about him. Now let's honor that choice and stop making it about one personality and win.
How is this a hard?
