Why it matters: The party will have to move quickly to get behind a new candidate, and senior Democrats will be highly influential in that process.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) refrained from mentioning Harris in their initial statements Sunday even as Biden immediately threw his support behind her.
Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), still one of the party's most influential figures, also didn't mention Harris.

(29,831 posts)They went to him with their concerns... and after listening to them, Joe has done one of the greatest acts a President can do, give up power for the good of the nation.

(29,831 posts)I'm sure they didn't want to step on Joe until he addresses the nation, which he will after he recovers from COVID.
Maybe they're waiting for their megadonor overlords to give them permission, or bend at the knee and agree to support Manchin -- per the oligarchs' demands.

(26,480 posts)Why It Matters: Because many low-information Internet addicts somehow think they're a reputable news source. And Axios' simple, bullet-point presentation allows those viewers to think they are informed.
The Bottom Line: As long as Axios can continue to sell ad space on these standardized PowerPoint "articles," their executive staff is likely to continue to rake in the bonuses for spending much time saying little.
What's Next: Probably, another few days of this coverage, until every leading Democrat has jumped on board the Harris train. At which point, they'll seize on another current issue to oversimplify. However, it's unlikely it will be anything negative about Trump.

(9,908 posts)Rather than feel like a top down directive. There's some resentment about all this among some voters, and letting the President shine on this day while others gather to lift up the new likely nominee is a good tack.
I have no doubt many conversations took place over the past week or so to various potential contenders, representatives, and party officials about what should happen when the President stepped aside.
Let it be that the party's making the decision with all these endorsements, and then they can come it and say, "The party seems to have chosen."
It just works more smoothly that way.
