Austin Davis - also a democrat - would take over as Governor and serve until the next election in 2026. Note that dems have won the last 3 Governor elections in PA with the closest being by 55% to 45%, so they will be in good position to win again in 2026 regardless.

is why he will be the pick.

Roy is 67 years old...even as a good friend of Kamala, it doesn't help the future of the USA.

Andy Beshear....actually is a pretty good option too...but

think Shapiro is the strongest.
It will be between Cooper (just the friend angle is keeping him in), Shapiro and Beshear.
Take away the friend and strategic miscalc of NC,
and it's between Shapiro and Beshear.

Shapiro is the CLEAR choice, and to be honest, it isn't even close.

though of course it shouldn't be, but this is America, and it would probably be safer to choose a Christian white guy like Cooper, who has a weighty resume. If we fail to win this election there is no future. He would reassure alot of whites and moderates that Harris is 'safe' to vote for the way Biden did for Obama.

I still have no good idea why Gore (or more likely the DNC) picked him, other than to normalize the Gore campaign after Clinton. In retrospect, Gore should have rolled out Bill as a surrogate instead of running away from him and his record.

The last thing we need is ugly - and they would be ugly - pro-Hamas demonstrations at the convention in Chicago. It would completely dominate coverage and disrupt the proceedings.

I am appalled by the anti-Semitism that's been uncovered since October 7, but I want the convention to go off without a hitch.

*Twice-elected in a state that leans right, the second time by a larger margin.
*Accomplished a lot of progressive victories in state with a Republican supermajority.
*North Carolina is in play this time. Honestly, many polls show it not much different than Pennsylvania.
*He was highly respected as an Attorney General--four terms as AG, actually.
*Harris and Cooper were AGs at the same time, so their relationship goes way back. Given the short timeframe to selecting a VP, that matters.
*He finishes his term this year, so we're not losing a good Democrat somewhere.
*Grew up working on a tobacco farm. A bit more "working class" bona fides than JD Vance.
*Finally, good debater and speaker.

Beshear could be impactful in neighboring states, but KY is certainly not going to go our way--nor would it really help much if they did. Still Beshear would be good on the campaign trail with undecideds. Buttigieg is a tremendous spokesperson for us--presumedly would fulfill that role regardless, but he is smart as a whip and very capable. Those who want to go after him for his being gay are hardly going to vote for anyone but the bigoted head MAGAT and I can't really think those non-Trumpist indies would let that influence them.

Kelly brings a lot to the table but AZ is still iffy going forward and he may be even more important remaining in the Senate. (although I'd love to see Gabby Gifford resume an even more significant role as 2nd lady with her voice amplified by the WH).

I think the key remains both strategic considerations and Harris' relationship with them.

is a curious critter - one part industrial Midwest, one part gentrified Mid-Atlantic state, one part Appalachia. It's the eastern half of the United States in microcosm. It's also the fifth most populous state in the Union, just edging out Illinois, and tying with Illinois for electoral votes. It also tends to be closest to Michigan politically - the two usually vote the same way up and down the ticket, so if you can take Pennsylvania, you probably have Michigan as well, so yeah, it's usually considered part of the Midwest.

Mon Jul 22, 2024, 11:36 AM

I think Shapiro would be a good fit too, but I think a decision has to be made about whether the Dems want the Midwest or want to make inroads into the South more. Both Shapiro and Whitmer give them the Midwest. I like the idea of an all-female ticket, but if it was purely pragmatic then I think it's a toss up. North Carolina would be an interesting flip - it's trending purple, but it's risky.

For that matter, I think choosing Mark Kelly COULD move AZ into the blue column more completely, and may take NV with it. Mark also brings an astronaut into the White House on the Dem side, which is likely to get the science nerds like me even more fired up (there are a lot more science-nerd-type techies out there than there are Tech Bros, FWIW). It's also an implicit FU to Eloon Musk and his Martian Chronicles, which is always a plus in my book.

It is nice to have a deep bench to choose from.
