(7,042 posts)The Republican party is no longer the party it was before 2016. What's funny about it is that while Democrats are fretting over theoretical polling data, Trump never actually won an election. Of course, he depended on the antiquated, outdated, undemocratic electoral college to win in 2016, but he's never achieved a majority of the popular vote, and he won't get there this time, either.
I'm curious, though. He got 79% of the primary vote, because even after the last challenger dropped out, people kept showing up to vote for her. If you were just going to support the party nominee, at that point, why make an effort to go vote against him, if you planned to vote for him in the general election? That's a factor the pollsters were ignoring in their "factoring." Were they subtracting 21% of the vote from his Republican total in the polling data, or was he getting 100% on the assumption all Republicans would vote for him?
