Harris gives Democrats hope of galvanizing young voters (Itś A New Day Folks)

“This has the potential to be a game changer for youth voter turnout going into November,” said Stevie O’Hanlon, communications director for the youth-led climate activist group Sunrise Movement.

Amid alarm about young voters feeling apathetic about 2024 or turning away from the Democratic Party, organizers are “really hopeful” about their ability to mobilize “with a new nominee that prioritizes speaking to and turning out young people,” O’Hanlon said.

In the day since Biden’s bombshell announcement, the Harris campaign has raked in nearly $50 million and become the subject of memes riffing off the vice president’s laugh, her love for Venn diagrams and her 2023 anecdote in which she quoted her mother saying, “I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?”

The Harris team is leaning into her online persona. Pop star Charli XCX made a viral post about the vice president, and Kamala HQ, the campaign’s rapid response team on the social platform X, changed its header image to mimic the singer’s new album.

Agree. Our election cycles are way too long. Having only 4 months until the election is good for staying enthusiastic Raftergirl Jul 2024 #7

Young voters will see one really old orange guy and a younger black woman. Hopefully they listen to at least one speech. That should do it.

Because many of us in the "reliable" senior voting block are very upset with the way this was handled by "leadership", and have lost trust in the process. Yes we will still vote blue, but maybe not with the same enthusiasm we had before this happened. I surely hope the gamble was worth it.

As are all the young I’ve heard from since yesterday. Nieces, nephews, cousin’s kid (mostly in their 30’s and 40’s) my son and gf who are 30 and 29, and kids around that age of friends. I called over to my.neighbors two, daughters that are visiting from out of town. They told me on their friend text threads everyone is very excited.
