He was appearing on MSNBC and he asked permission to tell the story about Biden before he answered whatever horserace type question he was asked. Probably so he wouldn't be interrupted. And he told it beautifully and sincerely.
Basically, it was about the Dem debates in 2019 when Swalwell was on a stage
with several candidate, one being Biden. His daughter was in the hospital and he had considered canceling the debate. Anyway, during the debate Swalwell let loose with a zinger about passing the torch. He was calling out Biden on his age, publicly, but Swalwell did point out that Biden himself had used that same line against someone else earlier in his career.
During the break, Biden approached Swalwell, who thought Biden was going to read him the riot act. And Biden did say "Nice zinger, wise ass." But right after that, he said, "How's your little girl?"
And Swalwell said that exchange was vintage Joe Biden. It showed he could take a punch, had a sense of humor about himself, but most of all, he never lost sight of what was really important.
I loved that story.

This is pure Joe Biden.

(55,334 posts)I supported Biden in 1988, even after the plagiarism scandal broke. Biden was my first choice in 2008.
It broke my heart coming to my conclusion this year. He always always elevated the discussion, put the emphasis on the right action, on the smart sustainable policies that would strengthen the country and enrich the regular people. He always explains things so well, so deeply in such clear logical terms. He's made us better voters by asking us all to be better citizens.
I'm glad he got to be president. I'm sad it came too late in his life, sihe doesn't get the validation of a reelection. Kamala will set the path for a new American renaissance (we have one or two those every generation). But in a way, her election will be his reëlection too

(1,352 posts)...but if I'd had any idea about the political courage and forethought this man would bring to the presidency, I would have supported him all those years ago as well.

I, too, am glad he got to be President. And he's certainly left this country in better shape than he found it.

(51,771 posts)That is probably when I first met you.
You're right about how he explained things so clearly and in language most people could understand. He never talked down to people and he didn't sound like a traditional politician. I got so frustrated when some people couldn't see what I saw.
It was a dream come true when he finally got elected president after all those years. Though I would have liked to see him serve eight years, I can handle him being a one term president, but I have major issues with the way he has been treated by the media, talk show hosts, and some Democratic politicians. Damn, he deserved so much better.

I remember back in 2008 someone said the Biden supporters were the nicest, most civil people on Democratic Underground. That was probably during a very contentious primary season.
I think Bucky used to have a lunch bag as his profile pic.

(5,978 posts)And he gets to see his legacy unfold while he is still alive. Kamala will finish what he started, but President Biden will be remembered and revered as one of the best presidents in modern history, and that's a big fucking deal, to paraphrase our Joe

(51,771 posts)They'll probably be too busy manufacturing stories from anonymous sources between now and November. We all remember what they did to Hillary. I'm amazed that any sane person stays in politics.

(13,957 posts)Bidens polling is not unrelated to a relentless attack from the media which began around the time of the Afghan withdrawal required by a Trump agreement and planned by the military. Mix in insane coverage of inflation and surrealistically unbalanced coverage of candidate age, plus the tangential Hunter Biden prosecution, and the medias complicity is clear. That they give Trump a pass because his criminality, vulgarity and generally treasonous acts are considered covered just makes the issue more clear.
PatSeg
(51,771 posts)It is inevitable that the media's coverage will affect polling. Then everyday we heard about Biden's age and not just from the news.
Late night talk show hosts and SNL kept harping on it. Soon people start to believe "Biden is too old to do the job" and that "He hasn't really done anything since taking office". He couldn't be doing anything significant because the news rarely reports it.

(13 posts)How many of us can say we were elected to the world's highest office?
How many of us have his vast array of accomplishments and effectiveness while in office such as effective management of a plague and economic restoration?
He quashed the threat against democracy represented by Trump.
He set the stage for his successor's strength.
Being denied a second bite of the apple that none of us could ever achieve is NOT a sad story.
JB's physicality has decreased to reduce his ability to be effective. This is not JB's doing or JB's fault.
This man still has plenty of gas in his tank and will still be a formidable asset on the US and world stage.
I hope that he can be effectively deployed as a resource doing town halls, fundraising, private meetings, and serving as an envoy for special issues.
I do not see any of this traveling and enjoying the grandkids shit for this active and vital man. He should be given short-term assignments that utilize his experience, warmth, humor, and desire to serve.
It is entirely possible that he can be an even greater "rock star" in his "third act."
To feel sorry for him is to disrespect him.

(10,955 posts)Alongside Presidents Carter and Obama, Joe Biden espouses every value and characteristic that I hope my children take out into the world with them. If his example were the norm, instead of being rundown by the antithesis of a good man in Trump, this country would be in a much better place.
What's wrong with America? If we start listening to and following the examples of men like Joe Biden and tune out the carnioval barkers liker Trump and Elon Musk, society would benefit immensely.
Thank you President Biden for a lifetime of service and decency in an unforgiving, harsh light. You are a beacon of what we should exalt and hold on high as the paragon of American virtue.

(750 posts)I remember that debate, the school bus issue....she was that little girl. He is the type of person who does not take things personally. It's about the issues not the person. Even in his recent interview with Lester Holt, where in my opinion Lester Holt was disrespectful, President Biden let him have it in a gentle but firm way. He even threw in a "God love ya" as he was questioning why Holt wasn't holding Trump to account on his 28 lies from the debate.
No question that Biden will go down in history as possibly the greatest President, although I always hope things will get even better in the future. And Joe would be good with that, that's just how he rolls. He is the type of person who believes that records are meant to be broken.
PatSeg
(51,771 posts)really hurt Joe, as Kamala was friends with Beau and was considered a friend of the family. So he did actually take it personally, but he was able to put it behind him and mend bridges.
What better way to show forgiveness than asking Kamala to be his VP pick.

(13,003 posts)or at least hope, that Kamala's inner circle of advisers is with Obama, Biden, Bill and Hillary Clinton. She sure couldn't ask for any better team. If she is smart, she will rely on them a lot, to help fill in with decades of experience, which she needs to get up to speed on so many things, right away......
If Kamala is smart, she will use them to the max. Not only for advice, but to have them call the people they know and have them get behind her........

We seem to be in an age when no good deed goes unpunished. Buddhists have a term for it, mappo in Japanese.
I am sure Joe conversed with advisors, some we don't see, whom many claim to follow, but don't. (You know EXACTLY what I mean)

and he is doing what is best for himself, his family, the country and the world, and for the compassionate teachings he believes in, as manifest in his behavior, rather than, and even opposing, the blasphemous misuse of them.
It's a whole lot. His job is not a "desk job". He's all about the globe, and might be almost as effective, and a bit safer, and safer from Putin's poison, in a less arduous setting.
His opponent, OUR opponent, is past his prime, past senility and doesn't have the brains to realize that he never would have been shot if he were behind prison walls where he belongs, but that can be arranged.
