(46,313 posts)WASHINGTON (AP) Congressional leaders have invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to deliver an address a the Capitol, a show of wartime support for the longtime ally despite mounting political divisions over Israels military assault on Gaza.
The invitation from House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, along with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, has been in the works for some time. No date for the speech was set.
Leaders said the invitation was extended to highlight Americas solidarity with Israel.
We invite you to share the Israeli governments vision for defending democracy, combatting terror and establishing a just and lasting peace in the region, they wrote.

(64,444 posts)The Democratic leaders joined so as to avoid an awkward diplomatic situation. They never, ever would have invited him. Schumer and Jeffries are smarter than that.

(46,313 posts)they did, as Netanyahu is an ultra-RW religio-fascist POS who hopes to his core that Trump wins.

(59,960 posts)Both Biden and Harris are likely to have meetings with him. It is very good that they won't be a captive audience for a corrupt foreign leader who is not in agreement with our foreign policy.

(13,538 posts)And I agree with you; he'd likely bring PA to the Dems along with 19 EC votes.

(27,746 posts)But the portion of the base she appears to be playing to by skipping out - is the same portion of the base that would take offense at a strong pro-Israel VP (let alone one who is Jewish)
But perhaps it's just a coincidence and she really does have somewhere else she needs to be
oldsoftie
(13,538 posts)Now she'll be labeled a Hamas supporter. We can have differences of opinion without publicly snubbing.
Unless the President will be in attendance but I haven't seen that reported.
This is a gift to the GQP

(936 posts)Netanyahu is also planning to meet with the dictator wannabe in Florida. Because he has decided to also meet with the con, I'm OK with her not meeting with him.

(13,538 posts)I hope they make a big deal out of THAT meeting. A private meeting is more important than sitting in for a speech
