I hope they can contribute to the discussion and try to refrain from bringing the horseshit that Trump and the Republicans promote. We have no tolerance for that anymore.
But they will not be pre-judged. Everybody gets a fair chance to make their point.
We all like fresh ideas.

(62,143 posts)last couple of weeks - and you'll find this an online home soon.
I was happy to explain how to post Twitter images, and hope that helps.
I also suggested in another thread that you not use AI browsers. I've posted a lot about AI, especially generative AI, on DU in the last year and a half, and you can probably find a lot of those posts about the problems with that tech if you use the Google search in the upper right corner to search for my user name plus keywords like AI, ChatGPT, OpenAI, Altman, etc.
There are already a lot of bots all over sites like Twitter, and I hope we won't get them here.

(62,143 posts)to help you write online posts, for instance, either offering to rewrite something you've already written, or even offering you suggestions about what to write. AI companies are well aware, too, that when people cowrite something with AI, their own ideas and opinions are often influenced by what the AI tool suggests.
The last thing an online forum like DU needs is AI-written messages. We need to hear from each other, learn what other people are really thinking.

(4,099 posts)Books, magazines, stone tablets, mathematics, history, philosophy, online forums such as Democratic Underground all represent different types of artificial intelligence.
Like many things it's all in how one uses the tool that defines it's usefulness within our society.
Search engines of all types, old library catalogs, databases of all types, etcetera ad nauseum are all examples of artificial intelligence.
What we don't want is malicious content.
What we resist is malicious intent.
Whatever device you're currently using as an interface for this forum is using astounding amounts of artificial intelligence.
Technology is not our enemy.
Ignorance, hatred and delusion are our mutual enemies.
Reason is our friend.

(1,783 posts)The last thing an online forum like DU needs is AI-written messages.
No one needs AI, they are falling for lies and schemes to take control over everything. I despise so-called AI, because we aren't even close to actually having AI.
As to being a newbie, I've lurked here off and on since early 2001, and this place was where I went first to hear whether what happened on 911 was true or not.

(9,103 posts)but in the meantime: I don't think it was meant to be snark.
That's the problem with on-line texts: there's often no way to know if someone is being sarcastic, or snarky, or ironic.
In an actual cconversation there are visial and verbal cues to pick up on, not so with posts or emails or texts.
I think, though, if it was intended to be snark the poster would have used an emoji to say so.
Anyway, welcome to DU!

I got cranky in 2016 over all of it and didn't freak out ... just took breaks and I'd check back in from time to time. After watching the insanity of Trump, I recently felt maybe it was time to get involved again. I could put aside grievances in order to push him into the dustbin of history. I think we have a really good shot of doing that with our VP Harris - she is a tremendous candidate!

(13,797 posts)So that limit is the border between newbie and rookie. To me anyway.
After 100 posts, getting tossed is up to the Admins, who can Tombstone anyone no matter their post count, or by repeatedly getting posts hidden by juries.
So, if your back is up and you are arguing in a thread - It might be best to step away for an hour or two to cool off.
A few "I'm not the asshole - YOU'RE THE ASSHOLE" spins on the merry-go-round might be enough to put you in jeopardy, and rookies don't have a significant track record to weigh when the admins look at the situation.
But I'm still here and I'm an asshole, so it ain't too hard to stay around.

DU is a "we" for the sake of rules to govern. DU is made up a group of individuals, and "we" is often used in threads to claim ownership and guilt others. Just like the slobfather makes his false "The U.S. citizens are against/for...." claims. It's his way of co-opting the entire country.

(1,121 posts)are not going to pay for the opportunity to shit-post. Post tally is also a good indicator. I'm under 1,000 after 12 years on this site but I've always come to DU to get informed and felt that I don't know enough to contribute substance to any informed discussion. I've always taken that old admonition: "Try to be informed rather than just opinionated," as applying directly to me. There are others on the front lines whose opinions carry more informed weight than mine.
Also, read or re-read the DU Core Principles and Rules . Using them as your yardstick to judge a post is a great way to apply a consistent evaluation standard to a post you find suspect.

I remember when Andy died and I remembered all the warring with freepers and I even had over 10000 posts. I remember you, niyad, the magistrate and californiapeggy and many others from back when we were so upset about the Bush v Gore decision and EarlG and others started this site. I still have a hard time seeing the letters enough to post so I won't be posting too much. I started over with a new username and password because Sunday when Biden dropped out I couldn't stand not being able to get on here because I just couldn't remember my username orpassword.

(11,989 posts)I think I got screwed up about my username because we had that one time we were allowed to change them if we wanted to.

(931 posts)Newbie, not-Newbie. Been here 15 years or so. Lost my last account name and password, but no loss. Less than 1,000 posts.
Older single Dad raising 15/daughter. Part of a start up technology company. Enjoy cooking, gardening, new tech, old books, and trying to keep up with current high school slang. (I understand it, but don't use it. Apparently when you're in your late 50s, that's cringe.) I don't bother keeping up with teen music, it sucks.
I come for the news posts, mildly-left to extremely left opinions. I surf other sites too, right wing ones as well, European sites discussing American politics (super interesting!) just because I do like to understand , or at least attempt to understand, as many points of view as possible.
OK, grocery shopping calls. Lasagna night tonight! Cheers!

(90,020 posts)Gotta say, the posts and testimonials, AND the loads of posts with different kinds of expertise here make a great read - including yours!
And I always wind up learning something.

(32,354 posts)Clusters of newbies turn up on DU---many of them angry and divisive.
This too shall pass.

(90,020 posts)BOTH those things - the angry and divisive ones, and your "this too shall pass."
Thanks for this message of yours, Paladin. Always good to keep in mind!
