General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIts Official: Journal of American Medicine finds red states suffered more Covid deaths.
JAMA Summary:
If all states had imposed COVID-19 restrictions similar to those used in the 10 most restrictive states, excess deaths would have been an estimated 10% to 21% lower than the 1.18 million that actually occurred during the 2-year period analyzed. The more restrictive states were in the northeast and the least restrictive were in the south and west.
In general, Republican controlled states ignored science and refused masking, closures, mandatory immunizations, and other measures which would have saved more of their citizens lives.
They just didnt kill Republicans. Democrats and Independents in their states also died unnecessarily as a result of their political approach to the pandemic.
The people who wouldnt wear a mask to protect their fellow citizens, wore gauze on their ears to support their Dear Leader at the Republican National Convention.
Lesson learned: Voting Democratic saves peoples lives.

(1,406 posts)Makes sense to me. Living in a red red area of a red state, I watched Covid unfold with terrified eyes. By the goddess grace I never ever got Covid only person I know. Family, friends, colleagues all had it at least once. Heartbreaking indeed.
Thank you so much, surfered, for these educational details.

(1,406 posts)Congratulations on your top-notch judgment skills in preventing Covid. Wisdom is a great healer!
Each health situation is unique. Personally, my plan is to wait until the new booster comes out shortly.
Being an author and unapologetic research geek (whose lengthy doctoral dissertation was an Analytical Study of the Nursing Shortage, and Specific Stress Factors of Individual Nurses), Id love to know the percentage of people over 65 and/or who are immuno-compromized who have never, ever contracted Covid. And what specific behaviors they did (and do) to make that happen.
Unfortunately, that info is not available from CDC or any other reputable sources Ive checked.
I even asked my brilliant physician last week what the percentage of patients he was seeing who had never contracted Covid, and all he could do was stare at me and make a guess. Almost none, he said.
Maybe we should start a DU conversation to collect anonymous data on specific behaviors that really work, so that in the future people would have better options to stay healthy.
Your thoughts?

(13,497 posts)It is not a booster, but rather a new vaccine that should protect against the recent variant. It seems that we will have a new one every fall, just like the flu shots.
We have had all shots offered, with the last one in September 2023.
We got Covid for the first time in October 2023. It was pretty bad and fatigue was the worst and longest lasting symptom. It took about a month to get back to our old selves.

(4,728 posts)The Right killed hundreds of thousands of their surest voters with covid. This tells me they don't care about the actual vote. They are counting on subverting the vote and the EC to win. HALF of the presidents in this century lost the popular vote.
One or a few Reich-wingers can legally challenge thousands of votes in key or blue districts, and tie up the system.
Bad actors are hitting election boards with blizzards of paperowrk requests.
Armed "observers" will be near polls, like in 2020, but now with bump stocks. The cops will be on their side.
Honest poll workers are harassed into quitting.
There will be out-and-out criminals tinkering with vote machines, like in Colorado and Georgia.
"Social" media will again collaborate with Big Data to game the EC.
The game strategies are endless. The Right thinks campaign money is best spent cheating, which is why they're pro-actively accusing their opposition of what they plan.
