General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI will let others debate over whether Pete Buttigieg should be VP or not, but regardless,
Pete Buttitgieg should be in a very visible position, not only in the campaign, but in the Harris administration.
He is an articulate effective spokesperson.

(130,538 posts)right now it would be insane to replace him with anyone at all, let alone someone with no foreign policy experience. Buttigieg is a star in many ways but Blinken needs to stay where he is. There are many better places for Buttigieg, maybe Chief of Staff or Press Secretary?

(29,634 posts)I would hope that a Harris administration would keep many of the appointments in place - for continuity AND because they are good appointments.

Edit : in 2019 he had many foreign endorsements for president.
I am sure he has many more today.

Buttigieg picks up more than 200 foreign policy endorsements
Pete Buttigieg announced Monday that he received endorsements from more than 200 foreign policy and national security officials, per USA Today.
Why it matters: It's another way for the South Bend, Ind., mayor to take aim at Joe Biden as his list includes a diverse group of Obama administration alumni described as the "next generation of foreign policy leaders" by the Buttigieg campaign's foreign policy head.
Buttigieg, who served in Afghanistan as a Navy intelligence officer, has faced skepticism about his foreign policy chops as mayor of the fourth-largest city in Indiana.

(1,213 posts)He's a super-smart guy, but his resume is far too thin on the ground. He has experience as a small-town mayor and running one of the lesser cabinet departments. That's it.
He's won POTUS primaries in small, racially homogenous states, but floundered when the states got bigger and browner. I'm not saying he's racist at all, but he lost his appeal with a more diverse voter base that he never managed to overcome.
He has never won statewide office.
He has zero legislative experience, a fatal flaw when one of the most important jobs of a VP is to act as a liaison between POTUS and Congress, particularly the Senate. Harris, Biden, Gore and (especially) LBJ have been or were effective VPs because they had served in the US Senate. Do not underestimate the greater influence a VP wields from having been a member of at least one of the Houses of Congress. A POTUS needs all the help she can get with pushing a legislative agenda; Buttgieg simply doesn't have the requisite juice with our legislative branch as an outsider to be effective.
He has no higher office experience like governor (or even lt governor).
He has no foreign policy experience.
For now, he simply does not have the chops for the officer. I believe he will get there, eventually, but now is not that time.

(29,949 posts)Hes no small town mayor anymore.

(26,507 posts)was Barack Obama.
I remember when he gave his speech at the DNC Convention when he was emerging on the national scene.
I said at that time - this guy is going to be President someday.
And it happened!!!!
I get the same feeling when I see and hear Pete talk.
There's no question in my mind - if I was Kamala - that Pete would be my running mate.
Attilatheblond
(8,878 posts)and possible cost us a lot of Independent voters. Pretty sure he is smart enough to stick with campaigning for Harris and down ballot DEMs. And pretty confident his wife does not want him to go back into national spotlight. She seems to have had enough of the bad treatment her husband has taken. I wouldn't blame her.

(26,507 posts)I was not suggesting that Barack Obama should be considered as a VP candidate for Kamala.
I was trying to make a point that Pete is as impressive as Barack Obama was when he first came on the scene.
I'm supporting Pete for VP among all the other candidates mentioned for consideration.
He is as impressive now as Obama was back then.
Pete would represent Kamala well as her running mate.
IMHO - they make a very strong ticket. They have would have a wide appeal over all generations of the Voting Electorate.

(8,878 posts)I may have read your post too quickly and missed nuance.
IMHO, Pete is even more impressive that Obama.

(36,669 posts)the VP could be elevated to president at any time due to death (car accident, whatever) - I believe you would need someone eligible to be president.
And anyway, the idea of putting a former potus in as vp just seems weird to me. It would be like a demotion.

(2,020 posts)He's our best talent out of the pool of contenders and should be there on the ticket with Kamala. We need someone inspiring who has her same amazing energy and brilliance.

(24,906 posts)I like everything about him, but making him Secretary of State would go well to enhance his resume. He speaks several foreign languages fluently. There's plenty of time for him to be president.

(22,685 posts)to a 58 year old man neighbor as we sat talking in my kitchen. The neighbor looked at me and said "Yeah, Black, Woman, Asian, Gay" - that would be an inclusive ticket. And we both started laughing. I had not thought that this gay neighbor would see it that way, I had not considered the issue of "gay" with either of them. DUH.
I think it would be a dynamite ticket. After the country evolves a bit more.

(24,906 posts)To say anything else would be saying Kamala Harris can't do two terms.
I will turn 71 tomorrow. I hope I live to see it.

(26,667 posts)That sure is the hope, isn't it? But the ReThugs have succeeding in turning back the clock over the past year. The Supreme Court, as currently constituted, makes me concerned that personal freedoms could be even more limited in the future, except for irresponsible gun owners. They'll be kept happy, no doubt.

He's a fantastic spokesman for Democrats.
So sharp. So quick. With tremendous communication skills to get his point across in a very accessible, non condescending way.
They have to make a VP pick to help Kamala. If Shapiro hands them PA, that might be the best way for them to go for this election.
If she picks Pete, he'll destroy JD Vance and he'll snag a bunch of media like Obama did with his smooth articulation of the party position vs the GOP lying.
Pete is too good to keep down. His time will come.

A) Thats my name
B) Hes an American hero in every sense of the word
3) Thats my name
D) I want Trump stomped. Pete being gay, in my opinion, is adding more ammo for them to use in this election. Much harder to attack an astronaut.
That being said, Ill be ecstatic if hes chosen! Gay or not, as if I give two shits outside of electoral chess, he absolutely represents me and Id be a proud Hoosier to vote for that ticket!

(7,014 posts)for Pete to be VP. Heck we have to deal with the racists and women haters this time. We are at a tipping point demograficly. I live in Michigan & Pete just might run for governor when Gov Whitmer's term is over in 2026.

(31,454 posts)could likely win the popular vote, but since we have to deal with the electoral college, the choice should be made from someone who puts a state in play that we need to win the electoral college. I agree that Pete should be given a very prominent position in the administration, but not VP. Not yet.
