This happened to my friend yesterday. She was in line behind a mom and two little girls chatting excitedly. They turned around and said to her, "Did you hear we are going to have a girl PRESIDENT?!"
They proceeded to have a conversation about it. My friend said it made her day.
President Harris will change lives in a multitude of ways.

spelling corrected. Actually it is not a phrase now that I think about it--it is a complete sentence.

(10,023 posts)In 2008, when she was in elementary school, my older daughter asked me, "Mommy, have we ever had a girl president?" I replied no. She was crushed when Hillary lost. She's now 22, proudly voted for the first time in 2020, & will vote for VP Harris in the fall. The same goes for my younger daughter, who voted for the first time in 2022. Their generation has seen firsthand what happens when bad candidates get elected. It's likely that we'll see a lot of young people voting this time around.

(12,544 posts)She's being raised in a conservative town -- her other set of grandparents are Republicans, they hated Biden, they complain about DEI, etc. etc. (Much to our sadness.) We had her to ourselves the other day, and were talking about the election, and she expressed confusion about "which side are we supposed to be on?" And when I said "we might have our first woman President," her eyes lit up and she said, "That would make all girls believe they could be President too!"

(11,233 posts)"What side are we supposed to be on?" I guess you just have to talk about how different people have different points of view?

The other day while in the elevator heading downstairs, one female resident complained about Kamala Harris and used the "DEI hire" line.
I said to this resident..."Did you come up with that phrase all on your own? Or did you hear it repeated on FOX News?" She and her walker left the elevator in silence.
I can suggest using that retort if anyone uses that term in reference to Kamala Harris. See what reaction you get.

(22,511 posts)And even if they know the words those letters stand for, they can't explain what they mean. So I approve of this tactic.
On MSNBC, Alex Wagner showed a montage of clips (see below) of Republican politicians and media personalities accusing Kamala of being a DEI hire, and it was patently clear that they had no idea what those three letters actually means. They just parrot it over and over, because it's useful as a racist dog whistle.
One guy* even said DEI stands for "Diversity, exclusion, and equity," which isn't even the right set of letters.

(3,213 posts)Robbed of 3 decent Spremes, robbed of 4 years of action on climate alteration, 4 extra years under our stewardship spent cleaning up after the last 4 instead of concrete action. Maybe, if we'd begun acting on climate change and reducing emissions in 1980, we'd begin to see the worst of climate start to subside. Now it'll take 80-100 years to get us back to today.
Paupering all of them wouldn't be enough of a fine

(43,850 posts)I had the weirdest experience on July 4th. Watching local (Seattle) coverage of fireworks I realized that all the commentators were women. It wasnt mentioned, it wasnt touted as special, it just was. Somehow I got choked up. This is what little girls need. To just be. To be anything. I so want to help make that happen.

But she wont. She will pick one because that is who has had the opportunity to rise to a level to be considered.

(1,645 posts)That little girl is a keeper! Shirley Chisholm ran for president in 1972. I was so excited about her run, and when we had a mock election I wrote her name in on the ballot. I was teased about it by my classmates, but my teacher was cool about it. He proceeded to talk about how important it was that everyone is able to vote for their choice. I have been waiting since 1972 for a woman to be president. I'm happy that these little girls won't have to wait as long as I have. Thank you so much for this post! It made my day, too!

(12,910 posts)MPR Minnesota Public Radio had a segment, maybe a whole half hour or hour on this about a couple years ago that was fascinating. As I remember it, there were no constitutional prohibitions to a woman being president (although one would have to get more votes from men than voted for any other candidate).
