The Quiet Bond Kamala Harris Forged With 3 VP Contenders

The New York Times
Of the five or six vice-presidential options currently seen as the most serious contenders, two of them — Governors Roy Cooper of North Carolina and Andy Beshear of Kentucky — directly overlapped with Ms. Harris as attorneys general. Now-Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania came into the job as she was leaving her post, and as Mr. Trump entered the White House.

A solid relationship with Roy Cooper

Of the former attorneys general turned vice-presidential hopefuls, Mr. Cooper, 67, served together the longest with Ms. Harris, 59.“They’ve certainly been to war together,” said Daniel R. Suvor, who served as chief of policy and senior counsel to Ms. Harris when she was attorney general, noting that she, Mr. Cooper and their counterparts would sometimes dine together in Washington “after a long day of negotiating with the banks.”

The ‘skill and toughness’ of Josh Shapiro

Ms. Harris and Mr. Shapiro, 51, have also known each other for years. In 2006, Ms. Harris, then the San Francisco district attorney, and Mr. Shapiro, a state representative from the Philadelphia suburbs, were tapped for a prestigious program for rising stars in American politics.Ten years later, Ms. Harris was in her last year as attorney general and running for Senate, while Mr. Shapiro was seeking the attorney general’s office in Pennsylvania.

Red-state appeal from Andy Beshear

Ms. Harris and Mr. Beshear overlapped as attorneys general for about a year. In an interview last week, the governor said he had come to know Ms. Harris later, as vice president. But he signaled that he saw a bond rooted in their previous jobs.
Mr. Beshear, 46, is a rare two-term Democratic governor in a deeply conservative state, skilled at connecting with voters who feel alienated from his national party. He is the most popular Democratic governor in the country, according to a recent analysis from Morning Consult, and he is gleefully challenging the Appalachian credentials of Mr. Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio.

Timothy James Walz (/wɔːlz/ WAWLZ; born April 6, 1964) is an American politician, former U.S. Army non-commissioned officer, and retired educator who has served since 2019 as the 41st governor of Minnesota. A member of the Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), he was a member of the United States House of Representatives representing Minnesota's 1st congressional district from 2007 to 2019.

Born in West Point, Nebraska, Walz was a member of the Army National Guard, and worked in agriculture, manufacturing, and teaching after high school.[3 . .

He was reelected five times, retiring in 2019 after being elected governor. Walz represented a large, mostly rural section of southern Minnesota situated along the border with Iowa.

2. Tim Walz is my favorite. I know she has had more experience with the others mentioned in the original post, but I think

Walz has the rural vote sewn up for anyone sitting on a fence, and he definitely has the younger vote. He's a breath of fresh air!

On edit: Roy Cooper is my governor, and he's a very grounded, smart, positive person, and he'd also make a very good VP.

6. Can't help but look at their age, how old will they be after two terms...

I'm 67 and aware that my memory isn't sharp, my energy isn't what it used to be, and declined invitations to run for local office because I want younger people in offices, everywhere.

So by that standard, Walz looks pretty good, being younger than me!

My thoughts are that VPs tend to become POTUS candidates and if Harris enjoys two terms, her VP may be older than would be ideal for a candidate we want to serve two more terms.

14. Actually, a two term Republican governor is a rarity in Kentucky, as in there have been none

From The National Governor's Association https://www.nga.org/former-governors/kentucky/

Until 1992 governors could not succeed themselves, so on the surface it would appear that two term Democratic governors are rare.

For some reason, KY has elected Democratic Governors yet the majority of US Senators have been Republicans. None of his predecessors were like McTurtle.

The last Southern State legislature to be 100% Republican was Kentucky. The House held out until 2014 (I think) At least half of the Congressional representatives were Democrats.
