powerful message to the British Empire that the states were united and would defeat them to achieve independence.

The rattlesnake symbol originally originated in the 1754 political cartoon “Join, or Die” published in Benjamin Franklin’s Pennsylvania Gazette. The cartoon, which depicted the colonies divided as segments of a cut-up snake, exhorted the colonists to unite in the face of the French and Indian War (1754–63). The symbol was later used to represent unity during the Revolutionary War.

Now I know that if someone has this on their license plate for bumper sticker they are rightwing extremists and it leaves a bad tase in my mouth.
