(28,066 posts)powerful message to the British Empire that the states were united and would defeat them to achieve independence.
The rattlesnake symbol originally originated in the 1754 political cartoon Join, or Die published in Benjamin Franklins Pennsylvania Gazette. The cartoon, which depicted the colonies divided as segments of a cut-up snake, exhorted the colonists to unite in the face of the French and Indian War (175463). The symbol was later used to represent unity during the Revolutionary War.
Now I know that if someone has this on their license plate for bumper sticker they are rightwing extremists and it leaves a bad tase in my mouth.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
