(84,621 posts)Or maybe something was found. Its too bad. I didnt think he was the right choice but I liked his enthusiasm.
LisaL
(47,339 posts)didn't think he should do it.

(1,663 posts)Perhaps from their point of view, Cooper had just finished his second term as governor, and they were looking forward to retirement. Unlike, say, Biden in 2008 who was about the same age Cooper is now but who clearly still had big ambitions, I don't get that vibe from Cooper.
We shall see!

(25,725 posts)Kind of like "too old for this shit".
Seriously doubt it is a scandal in his past.

(53,297 posts)He has been a statewide elected politician here for a couple of decades and there haven't even been rumors of anything. We aren't Delaware or Vermont but we aren't California or Texas either. I can't see him being able to hide a huge secret for that long in a fairly smallish state.
LisaL
(47,339 posts)At his age he could be ready to retire instead of starting a new job. Also, he withdraw his name. If something was found, he could have just been not selected.

(7,337 posts)So just move on. Or, perhaps they found something in background they didnt want to deal with.
LisaL
(47,339 posts)Maybe he just didn't want to do it.

(53,653 posts)He would be expected to deliver NC. No easy task. He would be blamed if we didn't capture MI PA WI. Not enough winning on the table, or at least that's how I see it.

(12,655 posts)Maybe he and his wife were looking forward to starting a normal life at the end of his last term as governor (term limited).
LisaL
(47,339 posts)At his age most people are looking forward to retirement.
Not starting a highly demanding new job.

doesnt hurt the ticket and potential upside for swaying the swing voters.
Pete Buttigieg is my personal favorite, and the perfect messenger.

(12,388 posts)A good thing for my State. I heard a political lawyer
On the Michelangelo show say that when a governor leaves a state to lets say campaign, the Lt. Governor assumes all duties of the Governor. That would mean Mark Robinson would become acting Gov in NC while Cooper is away, and our criminal supermajority would be able to do all kinds of bullshit in Coopers absence. And this NC legislature has proven how fucked up they will go to fulfill GQP wet dreams.
Island Blue
(6,287 posts)because you explained it better.
Traildogbob
(12,388 posts)What kind of voter suppression Robinson and the GQP supermajority could pull off while Copper would be on the trail with Kamala to give Robinson the win and the idiot running as Secretary of education (or no education allowed except Jeebus). Maybe Cooper is trying to preserve what democracy we have left here. Which is hanging by a thread.
Island Blue
(6,287 posts)was chomping at the bit for a chance to pull off some evil shenanigans!
I think Cooper will now put his heart & soul into campaigning for Kamala (& Josh Stein, etc.) in North Carolina!
Traildogbob
(12,388 posts)Like he is well versed in chomping too.
Evil POS. And fully supported by the SuperMajority.
Just look at how they got that power. Worst gerrymandering in the Nation. So bad the FEC said we are not to be considered a democracy.
And a lying ass woman ran as a pro choice Democrat, switched parties after elected and went fun in zero abortion.
We need a liberating force to come save us and give the leaders the Sadam treatment.
Island Blue
(6,287 posts)We have one (small) town in my county that is gerrymandered into two house districts. Its like the only semi-reliable blue town in the county. Go figure. 🙄
That is a terrific reason to withdraw.

(53,410 posts)Governor is out of the State.
Traildogbob
(12,388 posts)But this attorney on Michaels show was adamant about what he was saying. His law degree was in political regulations, and some states do not turn over control with an absence, but NC specifically does.
I really like Cooper and he has kept us surviving the criminality of the likes of Meadows Cawthorn and Virginia Fox. He has been our only lifeline.
The thought of Robinson with a once of power in terrifying.
And its been proven NC GQP could give a fuck about legal procedures.
But I am only passing on what this lawyer was very fired up about.
I had no idea, and it scared the shit out of me.

Ie his schooling was in NC and his life is in NC.

(19,342 posts)Here in NC we know. Hes a good man and has done a good job as governor but he doesnt like Politics. And this is going to be to big of a nasty election for him. They probably told him what he would have to do and he likely just didnt want any part of it.
He should however replace Garland as AG
TBF
(35,338 posts)maybe he and his wife just decided it was too much to take on if they had been looking forward to retirement soon. Even Joe Biden had retired & was pulled back in - and he had run for president more than once.

I wonder if the Times is correct here. Here is his statement on this.

(12,205 posts)Not his fault but that's the hand he was dealt.
He can't physically leave the state without a RWNJ becoming acting governor and assuming all powers of the governorship.
