Its just one report (not confirmed anywhere so may be rumor) but that usually happens when someone becomes VP pick. I could see him being the choice due to being from a red state and being successful there. All the VP candidates are strong... (I am Walz supporter).

(289 posts)If it does turn out to be Beshear thats OK too. All the candidates have strengths that could help the campaign.

(9,810 posts)I know it's a solid red state. Everyone but the Democratic governor, pretty much.
The governor is powerful in a state. He's like the president of the state. So he can do several things to stop republicans in his state from stealing an election, but not if he gives up his power IN THAT STATE to be a VP candidate.
Republicans plan to do all sorts of things to steal the election (see Rachel Maddow's show of Jul 29). A Democratic governor could stop quite a bit of the nonsense, unless he quit being governor to run for vp.

ETA: I know it isn't ideal and I tend to agree about taking blue governors out of red states.

My choice is Andy Besher. I know he is a risk, but I think he could bring a lot to the campaign
and later to the administration. He has a favorable reputation not only in Kentucky, but other Southern states as well.
Attached article highlights and expands on the pros and cons of selecting Besher.

With Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Democrats eye a VP pick who can win over blue-collar voters
The two-term governor, getting buzz as a potential running mate for Kamala Harris, won re-election last year in a state Trump won by more than 20 points in 2020.

(761 posts)to resign to be sworn in as VP. Plus as others have stated... there's not much to defend against in Kentucky. Maybe some legislative races. But there isn't any threat of trump/gop stealing KY.

(166 posts)Keep govs in blue states that CAN be stolen, dont worry about red states that are going to be red stealing or not.

(9,810 posts)about not stealing a red state...they would go for trump anyway, even if we took their governor onto the ticket.

BComplex
(9,810 posts)He's not running for president, he'd be running for Vice President....kind of an invisible position unless the person is a huge personality and outspoken and passionate, so it's not like we're going to win over a lot of midwestern conservatives by bringing in Beshear.
IMHO, Walz would have spoken strongly and with humor and style to the people that need to be won over, if there is any possibility that they MIGHT be won over, plus Walz would get the people who still aren't totally excited to be really excited...he's just that kind of speaker. And he's very midwestern.
But I've certainly been wrong before. I hope I'm wrong again.

Until the next election cycle in 2027. Beshear is term limited. So either way someone else will have to run for Governor in 2027. If he does ending up being the VP. Hopefully that will give Kentucky Democrats the advantage of incumbency.

(753 posts)Also, we have a Republican Secretary of State that is a good man. He's like a moderate, believe it or not. He's like Raffensperger in Georgia. He would never put up with shenanigans from his party about the vote.
