In 2021 on Fox News, Vance criticized Olympic gymnast Simone Biles for withdrawing from the Toyko Games to address her mental health. “It reflects pretty poorly on our sort of therapeutic society that we try to praise people, not for moments of strength, not for moments of heroism, but for their weakest moments,” he said then. Biles is only the third woman to win a second all-around title, the NYT reported.

It was courageous of her to withdraw. She had to know it would draw a firestorm of criticism like the above, but she was strong enough to prioritize her own well-being in the face of ignorant nonsense.

Not only that, but as a gymnast if she wasn't confident in her ability to perform her routines, she would risk career-ending injuries or worse.
