I have a few thoughts about Shapiro

Last edited Sat Aug 3, 2024, 12:12 PM - Edit history (1)

I think he's incredibly sharp and would make a valuable addition to the ticket. He's charismatic, quick on his feet, and would absolutely depants Vance (see what I did there?) in a debate.

I think that fears about him are overblown. There's no one who's clean enough to not be a target of the right-wing smear machine. Whomever VP Harris chooses will get targeted in the nastiest way possible, and there doesn't have to be any truth involved.

I don't like the idea of pandering to any religion. I don't want to hear about what Michigan Muslims want or don't want as a bloc, any more than I give a particular shit about what Southern Baptists want.

Has anyone not given any thought to the fact that the Trump campaign could make a great deal of hay by accusing VP Harris of being anti-Israel? And let's be honest: how many microseconds would it take them to call the Harris campaign pro-Hamas? They'd say, "She wouldn't pick a popular Jewish governor because she's pro-Hamas. She'll institute sharia law!" How many people in how many states would that push away from Harris? Less than the putatively upset Muslims in Michigan? More?

I like Gen Z, but if you allow them to dictate policy then you're going to end up with Secretary of State Taylor Swift.

On edit: the last sentence was humor. Generations joke about each other all the time. Get over yourselves.

I've been on his distlists since my daughter signed us up prior to the "march for our lives" which we attended here in Houston. I recently read he managed to get his undergraduate degree at Harvard, but he's still been doing his protesting & building the pac for young leaders on the side. He will absolutely support whoever the VP is, and most importantly support Harris all over social media.

Shapiro is that he has been considered anti-Palestinian. That is a hot topic right now across the world. Anti-Hamas is a given for any civilized person, but anti-Palestinian is not. I'm sure that Shapiro doesn't like to see innocent people suffer, but his stance on the war has not given him much breathing room on that score. That would be a biggie for a large voting block.

His negative comments about pro-palestinian protests were about the more violent bigoted extremists, he was very empathetic to the peaceful young people protesting the suffering of civilians in Gaza.

He also has long called for a two state solution and has great relationships w Muslims in his state. He is not “anti-Palestinian”

See:

Who’s Afraid of Josh Shapiro?
The Pennsylvania governor called Benjamin Netanyahu “one of the worst leaders of all time.” But anti-Israel activists don’t want him on the Democratic ticket.

By Yair Rosenberg

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2024/07/josh-shapiro-netanyahu-jewish-vp/679300/
https://archive.is/XQXcM

“I personally believe Benjamin Netanyahu is one of the worst leaders of all time,” Shapiro told reporters in January, months before Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called for the Israeli leader to resign. At the time, Shapiro also pressed for an “immediate two-state solution,” something Netanyahu and his hard-right government stridently oppose. The anti-Shapiro campaign ignores these remarks but makes much of the governor’s comparison of campus Gaza protesters to “people dressed up in KKK outfits.” When he said that in an interview, however, Shapiro was distinguishing between bigoted extremists—such as the Columbia campus-protest leader who called for killing “Zionists”—and peaceful demonstrators, about whom the governor has said, “It’s right for young people to righteously protest and question.”

The whole article is great and punctures all the disinformation being spread by bad faith actors.

Btw, around 40 per cent or so of Gen Zers were not even born when Taylor Swift put out her first album.

Hell, I am a late born Millennial and I was only 9 years old when her first single from it dropped.

I don't understand why we even need to have names for so-called "generations." It is completely arbitrary and inherently divisive. In the 60s I objected to the phrase "never trust anyone over 35." That sort of thinking was idiotic then and it is idiotic now.
