If you watch those races, you'll see both a finish lone camera & a camera on a track that runs to the left of lane 1.
The finish line camera is called a FinishLynx, and it operates at 20,000 frames per second.
With these guys running at about 1020 cm/s, the camera can discern a difference of around 0.2mm! That's around the thickness of a sheet of printer paper. Pretty amazing stuff.

The front page of Google has 9.79 for both. Al Jazeera had the 3 decimals I posted.

When Lyles ripped off his name my wife and I (she ran track) were like Huh? When they finally got to the reply it showed that Lyle’s won. Kerley’s (US Bronze) foot was actually across first but that doesn’t count of course (safety I think).

Man, Lyle’s last 5-6 footfalls (and push offs) were truly a whole other gear.

It wasn't until the slo-mo replay that I saw he leaned into the line first.
If Lyles had a hood start, (and he rarely does), nobody could touch him. His top gear is unreal.

Athletes at this level are finely-tuned machines and monitoring technology is superb. They strive for fractions of a second and the machines can measure it. That makes the winner the winner.

and it goes way back. You can have people flailing a foot across the line and possibly tripping people at full speed. Diving doesn’t help either staying on your feet has been proven to be faster.

Lyles last 5-6 footfalls (and push offs) were massive.

... and shows how incredible it will be to watch someone beat Usain Bolt's 9.58 WR. It'll happen sometime ... maybe it will be Noah.

I watched a short interview with him on the NBC website, and he's been working really hard, for example, putting himself into world-class 60m competition to work on the first half of his 100m run. This was a great race to watch. He really puts the hammer down in the last half of the 100! What I noticed in a slow motion shot of him running straight at the camera (in another race) was that he has an amazing amount of air time ... his foot contact is really brief - he's just flying ... and it looks like he gets his knees up a few cm higher than the other runners. You can see it in this race, too, if you watch at 25% speed.

I really enjoyed watching that ... thanks for posting.

I saw Randy moss play a few games at Marshall. My whole family is Marshall.

Ohio U (not State) Bobcats were in town for an a whooping.
My brother and I (the only game I think he saw) watched Miss take the second half kick off near the goal line. The Bobcats coverage looked to split a bit. Stay in your lane. As I started thinking “If he hits that gap…”. But the time I got to “If he..” he was through the gap.

His left foot hit the 40, left 35, right 30, left 25, right 20.in football gear. 5 steps. 20 yards. 60 feet. The closest I’ve ever witnessed to a human flying.

My brother (never at a loss for words) says as my mouth is agape, “Was he flying?” We cracked up. It was right there in front of both of us.

He’s 23 but this was his first global championship. No World championship races. First Olympics.

He posted a 9.91 at the Jamaican preliminaries. Coach planned on that being it apparently. It was enough to get him in the team. Injury problems but it’s like he came out of nowhere.

The shorter guy had the better lean. Bolt never had to worry about that! Thompson will probably have another crack at it in '28. Plenty of time to work on his finish. I can't ever remember seeing a more competitive 100m. Best wishes to all those incredible athletes.
