General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhat's happening with the stock market is apparently a correction, not a crash, of overvalued stocks, mostly tech/AI.
There have been indications for some time that investors are becoming more wary that claims made for the profitability and usefulness of AI were overpromising.
That still didn't stop the hype, including really outrageous examples like OpenAI's Sam Altman telling possible investors several months ago that they should give him $7 TRILLION - maybe more - because "compute" was the most valuable thing in the world and he really, really needed that money for more data centers, chips, etc. Sort of a last desperate plea for money for a fantasy before the bubble began to deflate, if not burst.
Crypto is sinking, too, as it should. Crypto advocates have been wanting the US government to buy a lot of crypto, something Trump is apparently willing to go along with, so it's no surprise that crypto will be less valuable as it seems less likely he'll win in November.
Twitter, which does hysteria well, has #stockmarketcrash trending...and that asshole Musk has Biden's birthday tweet for Obama appearing as the very first tweet you see when you click on that hashtag. This has been going on for about 12 hours, according to tweets I've seen, which pretty much guarantees Musk ordered it and it didn't happen because some of the RWNJs replying to the birthday tweet added the #stockmarketcrash hashtag to their tweets. It's been obvious for a long time that good news about Biden would usually.fail to show up under Trending topics, while Musk's Twitter hypes any bad news about him. Idiot Musk is probably giggling about this one.
But it's just a correction, and only morons would believe it's a crash...or that Biden had anything to do with it.

The index is constructed using a capitalization weighted index methodology. The market capitalization of each index member is also adjusted by a float adjustment. For additional details see the index methodology reference documentation provided by SP Global below.

(448 posts)For President Biden and Vice President ( soon to be President-elect) Harris to make a statement just like you stated. People get very nervous when they see their wealth go down by a larger amount. I really think Biden and Harris can explain it just like you did, to calm the nervous people out there.
This, too, shall pass. Investments are for the long term, not short term. Right now, however, we have this massive boomer generation holding a good bit of wealth. I dont want them nervous. Our President can assure them.

"Will be curious to see what the Fed does. The market has been just kind of stupidly buoyant. You think, 'Ok, now it will correct.' And it does. For like ten seconds. Then back up it goes. To be honest, it feels like stock in general has been overinflated for awhile now. If there's a serious downturn in the near future, I won't be surprised."

This correction - he'll use as a crash. Biden's & Kamala's fault. It wouldn't happen if I were president. Vote for me.
He was out of the news loop for a week or so - and lo and behold - there's an assassination attempt - to boost him right back on top.
Why does everything seem to fall his way?
He'll be crying 'recession' between now and November now.
And his 'moron' MAGA's will eat it up.

(114,602 posts)that has the quick buck crowd feeling very jittery. Yes, it's overdue for a correction. It's going to be manipulated downward in an attempt to make the Democrats look bad (good luck with that, assholes, may you all lose everything). It's also a case of war jitters over Iran beating the war drums and Netanyahu thumbing his nose at everybody.
Expect to get bitten by the bears in the short term, in other words. Try to remember that the stupidest reason for any financial decision is fear. Panic is worse.

(51,241 posts)S&P 500 is down around 6%. And that's for the month. They are all still way up for the year. For example, NASDAQ is up 17% for the year (last 52 weeks).
Stock market can have dips, corrections, and even crash. But the US economy is impossible to be declared in recession until January 2025 at the earliest based on GDP measured in quarters.
Don't be distracted by RW media trying to influence this election. They are spewing BS and amplifying it where they can. If anything, the labor supply might start balancing from "labor shortage" towards "full employment". Then prices for some things might continue to decrease. RW media likes to focus on gas and oil because that has influence from global conflicts more than Biden-Harris policies.

(8,003 posts)....and "corrections", some while manning a trading desk for a hedge fund.
In the end, global capital wins. When the monied elite's assets are "challenged" they re-write the rules. Look no further than the Fed's response to the pandemic. When the global financial markets began to fall off a cliff, they just created trillions in enormously powerful bank reserves out of thin air. Nobody cared.
We all go along with it because we want our ATM/Credit card to work when we use it.
The global financial system is staggeringly complex and is built on confidence. In essence modern money is an illusion that allows goods and services to transact.
Contrary to popular belief gold is no better. You can't eat gold. It is only a medium of exchange or store of value if we deem it as such. Energy has far more intrinsic value. That is why Nixon brilliantly pegged the dollar to gold when he got OPEC to accept payments only in US Dollars. Nixon for all his faults knew how the game was played.
All of these "stores of value" are essentially confidence games, a virtualization of what we really need to survive, food, water, shelter, safety from predators.
Freaking out over the daily mark to market of notational values is an exercise in futility.
In the end GLOBAL CAPTIAL WINS...

(169,537 posts)and especially related to the Dow - it was WAAAAYYYY overdue for a correction (S&P last had one back in February I believe).
With it (the Dow since it usually gets the "headlines" ) having been running in the 39,000 - 40,000 range, a 1000 point drop is about 2.5%. Correction territory would be in the 10% range or about 3,900 points.
This is not Oct. 1987 when there was a 508 point drop in a Dow that was in the 2,250 range at the time, which resulted in what became a 23% drop that day.
Compare and contrast 2,250 to 39,056 (at the open this morning). For an equivalent "drop", the Dow would need to lose 8,983 points in a single day.
Some of us also remember when Obama first took office in 2009, where the Dow had reached a high of about 14,000 previously, and by March of 2009, had dropped to as low as about 6,000.
As some others noted - better now than right before the election!

(9,045 posts)and way over-manipulated for a long time now. I said from the beginning of the start of using algorithms for buying/selling that it should not be allowed. The market should be determined by what value humans put on a stock and not some contrived "automation" of the market and processes. Now we have circuit breakers etc. for when the machines get too crazy and swing to runaway buying or selling. How about "pulling the plug" and getting back to human beings making decisions? Short selling also needs to be curbed in a major way as well as derivatives and all the other "exotic" zombie creations. Crypto should not be something even in the same realm as the stock market/financial industry. Let it be there with comic books, trading cards and all the "other" things people can buy and sell but it should never be allowed anywhere near the financial markets.

(12,643 posts)To the filthy-rich, the US economy has some kind of contraction in about 2 to 8 years later. Sometimes there is a small correction at first, then followed by a bigger one. It's because the filthy-rich are looking for places to put their excess money and get more money for their money.
They frequently do it in the stock market but other markets are also used to stash unexpected excess wealth of the already wealthy. The tulip bulb bubble comes to mind.
It's hard to predict the future but putting more wealth in the hands of the already wealthy, especially in capitalism, is really bad for most long term economies. But if just want a quick upward flush of conspicuous wealth, giving the rich more is the way to go.
