It was a smallish fundraising event at a house here in Minneapolis and Jim Hightower was the special guest. How this wasn't a bigger event with Hightower, I don't know.
Mrs. geardaddy and I were mainly there to meet Jim Hightower, who was kind of hero to us, but also to support the DFL candidate for Minnesota's 1st Congressional District, which had been a solid red district for several years.
Walz was standing next to Hightower and the host of the event there in the backyard of the host's house, and he seemed like a regular guy, unlike some politicians who seem polished, rich and coiffed. This set us at ease, and the 1st District is primarily rural with some smaller cities, Walz seemed to fit into that demographic.
We got to meet him and chat with him for a few minutes (again, a small event). I don't remember what we chatted about, but he seemed to an honest, down-to-earth, and earnest person.
Over the years, we followed his rise to US Rep and then to Governor and that aura of honesty and earnestness hasn't changed. His handling of the Covid-19 pandemic here in Minnesota was excellent, and I think a model for how to run state government in dangerous times.
While we are sad to see him leave as Governor, we're very happy to share him with the nation and I know that Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan will be ready to be Governor on Day 1.
Congratulations to Tim Walz!

Great times ahead for the Democratic Party ticket.

(1,213 posts)I think it was late 1981 or early 1982, when she was considering the state treasurer run. Molly Ivins was there, too. I nearly lost my ribs from laughing so much.
Funny, Hightower was at that event, as well! I'd almost forgotten him because Richards and Ivins were so, shall we say, colorful?
