General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI had to turn off Velshi.
He was being critical of VP Harris for calling down anti-Israel hecklers.
I won't speculate about the reason that Velshi believes that anti-Israel hecklers should interrupt ANY speaker. (Heckler is not a term of endearment.) Whatever his reason, I'm in no mood to hear it tonight.

I don't know what is wrong with some of the talking heads.

(23,227 posts)And address it in great detail.
Reports from Detroit are that she met briefly with to pro-Palestine activists before her rally, and expressed a willingness to discuss an arms embargo to Israel, and gave aides instructions to follow up.
Today, however, the media reports that Harris is not in favor of an embargo.
Clarity on this issue is essential.
TomSlick
(13,013 posts)Nevertheless, heckling is not the way to advance the issue. VP Harris ain't stupid, she knows.
The only logical reason to heckle at a Harris/Walz event is to help Trump and Corporal REMF.
Fiendish Thingy
(23,227 posts)I know she wont use the genocide word, but she could put a lot of this to rest by saying something like if Trump is elected, in addition to all the other problems he would cause, you will get two guaranteed genocides- one in Gaza, the other in Ukraine. Elect me, and the Gazans and Ukrainians will both have a fighting chance to survive in peace.

(319,067 posts)they going to do if VP Harris isn't for the "Embargo".. Vote for TSF or stay home which is the same. They don't care about the USA's Democracy... They get TSF.. they get Netanyahu
and see what they do to GAZA.
Would it be worth it to them to show the, Stupid label, "Genocide" Dems?
I bet Netanyahu is cheering for TSF NOW.
TomSlick
(13,013 posts)He knows that with Trump he will have a free hand to depopulate Gaza.
The irony is that Hamas is also cheering Trump. Hamas does not want peace. It wants to fight Israel to the last Palestinian thinking that will start a broader war by the Muslim world against Israel. So at least some number of the hecklers really do want Trump to win.

(7,046 posts)But they were rude and discourteous anyway.
Here's the way I look at it, and just to be clear before I start, I'm fully supportive of a cease fire, arms embargo and a two state solution. More violence only makes things worse. Regardless of politics, these are human beings who are suffering and resolving that should be a priority.
The only hope for any settlement of the Gaza War is with the United States. This country is a democracy, and the will of the people still prevails. No President has the ability to unilaterally embargo the shipment of arms to Israel, under the treaties that have been negotiated between the two countries, and any embargo would require the approval of the Senate.
Be realistic. It's not exaggerating to say that, not only would the position of Gaza grow immeasurably worse under a Trump Presidency, he would likely give the green light to Netanyahu to wipe Gaza out permanently.
Perhaps a little education in politics is warranted here. These people want something done. Both the President and Vice President have listened, and offered and asked for the patience required to walk through this situation. After meeting with the Vice President and Governor Walz, the response should have been to provide support for the courtesy that was granted. If I were running for President, I'd be a whole lot more inclined and motivated to try and find a reasonable and workable solution to a problem I'd been asked to resolve if those who were asking were polite and courteous, instead of loud and rude. I think the conclusion that has been reached, that these people are narrowly focused on their own interest and haven't really supported Democratic candidates anyway, needs to be brought to their attention. They have no where else to go. So they need to be patient, gain some understanding of how politics works, and participate in the process, and provide the kind of support they are capable of doing without strings attached, knowing that this is the party that is actually listening and is desiring to make things so much better.

(697 posts)The screaming rioters and hecklers actually prolong the conflict because they turn everyday people against them. Harris has been critical of both sides and supports a durable agreement; she also supports Israel defending itself from terrorists. That's a reasonable position to have for an American president, and good on her for telling the hecklers to STFU.
H2O Man
(79,048 posts)US presidents and other politicians has a long history. In every significant case, people are divided on if the hecklers are rude and crude, or if they are heroic, or simply don't give a shit.
When there are times of war, or the funding of foreign wars, it is more likely to create emotional responses. I have to admit that I thought it was delightful when people heckled Nixon and Reagan. No matter if I agree or disagree with hecklers, I appreciate that they are exercising Amendment 1 rights. And I think that VP Harris is fully capable of handling that or any situations.
More, no matter if I agree or disagree with Mr. Velshi, I respect him. I have no problem discussing differences of opinion. At the same time, I respect your right to turn it off. That includes tonight, when you aren't in the mood to hear it, or any other night. I find my mood is better when I watch as little news programs as possible.

(35,075 posts)First of all, she met with the Palestinian advocates / leaders prior to the rally.
I haven't had a chance to see the entire rally, but the hecklers interrupted at least two times.
So was she supposed to shut up and let them interrupt her entire speech? What exactly did velshi want her to do? 🙄
