1. A mic in the center aisle of the press crowd
2. Reporters approach mic one at a time
3. They say who they are and what media outlet they represent
4. They ask their question(s).
5. They request follow-up, if any.
6. They sit down.
7. Next reporter approaches mic.
One major problem with these current media feeding frenzies is that no one knows who these "reporters" are and who they represent. I realize there's no Dan Rather or Helen Thomas or Howard K. Smith or Eric Sevareid out there in this era of fluff-chick Kaitlins and brainless Brads looking for their "gotcha" moment. But after watching the epic media-slamming takedown by Lawrence O'Donnell last night, I'm convinced that order needs to be restored for America to learn anything. And if there's no order in the press conference, as in Trump's verbal diarrhea yesterday, don't show it!
I spent a career in media, on both sides of that mic, and what I see now is fully revolting.

(1,519 posts)I think it's a great idea.
The media is out of control,
They need to be doing real time fact checking , even on themselves, before they announced anything.

(4,042 posts)By labeling this gibberish a "press conference" the networks legitimized the whole thing. And, by not having any fact checks concurrent, there was a certain amount of normalization which Fox News will repeat.

(17,377 posts)IS badly needed. But who sets the rules other than those holding a press conference? I don't have a clue, but is there an entity or vehicle for doing this?

Yes, let's level the playing field with equal time for everyone.

(1,121 posts)accrediting organization for the White House and Presidential press pool. It issues the credentials a reporter to report from the White House grounds, follow the President on Air Force One, have a reporter and photographer taking turns in the rotating press pool, and so on. Currently, the White House Correspondents Association is in a high dudgeon over President Biden's criticism about reporters "playing by the rules" during the recent NATO summit in Italy.
With the current snarling hyena pack conduct, the civilized idea of reporters at a central microphone and the others politely waiting their turn, is a nice idea but it'll never happen. The only way that braying scrum conduct will ever be controlled is to take reporters one by one from the White House Briefing Room into another room with the President, allow 1 question and one follow up, then escort the reporter back to the Briefing Room, select another reporter, escort them to the President, rinse repeat.
The White House Correspondents Association would never agree to that.

(3,096 posts)we need to know who they are or who they work for?
As far as I'm concerned, even a regular nobody like me should even be able to ask a question.
News media is not supposed to be a friend to nor loyal to anyone. They are simply supposed to tell the truth. And that truth isn't "news" if it's not unusual or unknown.
I'll watch The Simpsons if I want to be entertained.
