Donald Trump makes a campaign stop in Bozeman Friday night, headlining a rally at Montana State Universitys Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. But a visit from the former president comes with a cost.
Around the country, reports claim his campaign rarely pays invoices to local government for the increased police presence, security and other costs that come with hosting the event. Some places in Montana are still expecting payment.
Back in 2018, Trump visited Montana four times, holding rallies in Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls and Missoula.
Officials with Missoula County confirmed and sent NBC Montana the invoice showing $12,922.82 is still owed. That breaks down to $10,835.41 for officer salaries, $1,059.26 for dispatcher salaries, $693.72 for Office of Emergency Management and $334.43 for miscellaneous expenses.

(3,229 posts)... of complaints and lawsuits against the Trump campaign for precisely this sort of fiduciary malfeasance, it's all but guaranteed to be the reason. The Orange Gargoyle has stiffed literally thousands of people and companies throughout his dishonorable career. It's one of his defining characteristics. I've read that a few who were bankrupted by Trump took their own lives because of what he did to them. One does business with that thieving scuzz-bucket at one's peril.
In 2016 it was reported that there were more than 4,000 lawsuits pending against him, and those were just the ones that could afford the litigation. Many more just closed their doors rather than be bankrupted by legal fees.
Trump is rotten down to his DNA. Which says nothing good about the judgement or character of those mental defectives that still support him.

(128,727 posts)that the FBO at BZN wouldn't sell them any more fuel until they paid a bill left over from the last visit (I can't think of any other reason for an outstanding debt as high as $12K). So they had to come up with a reason to land at BIL if they wanted to be able to buy enough fuel to get home (and probably stiff the FBO at BIL). So - they came up with some lame-ass mechanical problem that wasn't an emergency and wouldn't require an NTSB report but that they still couldn't make another 140 miles to BZN.

(7,279 posts)and I lean towards it's being true. While I can't imagine any ATC refusing a plane to land if it's in trouble, one who is NOT in trouble but who has stiffed paying agreed-upon contracts, I can see them saying "move on to the next town." If this is true and it could go viral, I imagine it would take the wind out of the crashed helicopter story! Just show him to be the deadbeat and liar he is. (128,727 posts)Aircraft operations are under the jurisdiction of the FAA. Airports charge landing fees for larger airplanes, based on their maximum landing weight, which is about 90,000 lbs. for a 757. BZN charges only $3 per 1,000 lbs., so that fee would be only about $270 - which doesn't explain the claimed $12K. However, an FBO operator could refuse to hangar or fuel the airplane once it landed, and an amount that high might be for fuel (if he'd ever been to BZN before). Since Jet-A costs about $6 per gallon and a 757 can hold as much as 11,000 gallons, it could be that he has an outstanding fuel bill from a previous visit and was notified that he couldn't buy any more fuel at BZN until he paid the past due bill. That's assuming this claim is true in the first place.

Trump's Bozeman rally highlights unpaid costs from past Montana visits

An official with the city of Billings confirmed they were never reimbursed for the cost of additional police presence totaling $45,900. On the other hand, Cascade County Commissioner Jim Larson tells us the rally in Great Falls in July of 2018 was paid off. NBC Montana emailed Larson about the payment.
I didnt pay any attention to it at that time, and now with your email, I called them and there never was any outstanding debt, he said. They shared the invoice, showing the total cost was $9,372.95. Expenses included $6,000 to rent the Four Seasons Arena and $3,372.95 for miscellaneous items. The bill was paid in December 2018. NBC Montana checked with the city of Bozeman and Gallatin County to see if Trumps rally in 2018 was ever reimbursed and if they have any projections for the cost of this Fridays rally. We did not hear back before filing this story.

MontanaMama
(24,600 posts)Former President Donald Trump's plane was forced Friday to divert its landing to Billings, Montana, due to a mechanical issue, airport officials confirmed to CBS News.
Trump was holding a rally in Bozeman, Montana, Friday night, but his private plane landed instead in Billings Friday afternoon, Billings-Logan International Airport said in a statement. Bozeman is about 150 miles west of Billings.
The airport said Trump's plane "landed without incident," and Trump then departed for Bozeman on another private jet. The details of the mechanical issue were not confirmed.
Trump's Bozeman rally was scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. local time, or 10 p.m. ET, and supporters lined up hours ahead of the scheduled start time to secure a spot. He did not take the stage until about 11:30 p.m. ET, however. /b]

(24,600 posts)Trumps campaign has been notorious for flaking on bills for security. According to a 2019 report from the Center for Public Integrity, Trump owed more than $840,000 to various city governments, and likely more, as Trumps campaign does not acknowledge a single one of these city governments as debt in his federal campaign financial disclosures.
In Billings, the protective measures put in place for his September 2018 rally resulted in 1,362 overtime hours between Billings PD and the Yellowstone County Sheriffs office: 951 hours from the former, and 411 hours from the latter, bringing the total cost to $58,830.
While the Yellowstone Sheriffs office did not bill Trumps campaign for the $12,930 cost it incurred a standard practice the office follows for all political campaigns Billings PD did, and as of the publication date of this article, that $45,900 bill has been left unpaid.
Earlier that year, Vice President Mike Pence and Donald Trump Jr. also made stops in Billings. The vice president spoke at a public rally on July 25, also at MetraPark, organized by America First Policies. Donald Trump Jr. spoke at the Republican Convention in Billings on June 22.
According to an internal memo sent to city council on Sept. 13, 2018, Vice President Mike Pences July 25 visit required 647.50 hours of overtime pay, totalling $31,200. Donald Trump Jr.s visit ran $5,000 in overtime pay, bringing the total amount spent by the Billings Police Department alone on security for Trumps campaign rallies in Billings in 2018 to $82,100.
Billings isnt alone. Missoula county commissioners also sent a bill to the Trump campaign in 2018 for nearly $13,000 for public safety staffing costs. The county requested $10,835.41 for officer salaries, $1,059.26 for dispatcher salaries, $693.72 for Office of Emergency Management salaries, and $334.43 for miscellaneous expenses. According to Missoula County Communications Manager Allison Franz, that bill has also not been paid.
Some municipalities, like Great Falls, dont submit requests for payment, instead eating the cost from their own budgets. The Great Falls Tribune reported Trumps July 5 visit to Great Falls cost the city, Cascade County and Montana Highway Patrol a total of $57,236, none of which was submitted for payment to Trumps campaign.
In total, in 2018 alone, Trumps campaign cost various city and state departments whether they billed for reimbursement and werent paid, or never billed at all at least $150,000 in taxpayer money.
Its a lot for a budget, Lennick said. Its not something thats built into our initial budget that we plan every year.
hawkeye21
(313 posts)This is another travesty of justice, and every news outlet in America should be calling attention to this. Poor families have their power shut off for nonpayment. But an alleged billionaire can run around the country and ignore bills in the tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars with NO consequences, no accountability. That, my friends, is just plain bullshit.
Why hasn't Trump been arrested by some of these cities and counties? Why haven't his assets been seized? Why do they keep providing services for a visitor who hasn't paid previous bills?

Consider that a lesson learned for Wildwood, N.J.: This time, Trump's campaign needed to pay ahead of time for the rally Trump is hosting on Saturday at Wildwood Beach.
The Trump campaign paid $54,200 for public safety and clean-up costs ahead of Saturday's rally that's expected to draw thousands of visitors, NJ.com reported.
Lisa Fagan, public information officer for the city of Wildwood, N.J., confirmed to Raw Story that the Trump campaign paid $54,200 plus an additional $150 that "covers all event costs that the city might incur."
"We are working in tandem with the Secret Service who are running all security measures," Fagan said.
All city departments work together to support such an event, Fagan said.
Take the politics out of it and people would bend over backward for this number of people to come to their town, Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr., a Republican and Trump supporter, told The Philadelphia Inquirer. We become national spotlight. They see the size of the beaches, they see the amusement parks we have to offer, our restaurants and hotels take a good hit.
