Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsChuck Todd actually said something profound about trump
Well it wasn't his original idea- He said that someone in trump's circle told him this.
One reason trump has not been able to launch an effective attack against VP Harris is that he really wanted to " avenge" his 2020 loss against Biden. He really wanted to beat Biden to say that " See, 2020 was an aberration". That has been taken away from him and he has not been able to get over that.
Of course, I don't think that is the only reason, but it does make sense. He has spent the last 4 years planning to beat Joe Biden. Not just to say he beat him, but to say I am better than him. I was better than him in 2020 and it was taken from me.
He's not able to pivot to VP Harris because he's still mad that he won't get his " revenge" against President Biden.

(13,485 posts)And Obama's mockery of trump at the correspondents' dinner in 2011 is a big driver for the man.
There is a reason trump says Obama when he means Biden so often.
Biden's win just reopened the wound to trump's eggshell ego suffered that night in 2011. The wound has been eating at the man, and will continue to, for the rest of his life.
And now he will never get his revenge on either of them.
He's a poor, sad, dangerous, bitter, and horrible human that can't be allowed to remain center stage in our politics.
ShazzieB
(22,708 posts)I never thought about that, but it makes perfect sense!
Donald couldn't get direct revenge on Obama, so he settled for the secondary satisfaction of running for potus in 2016. When he found himself running against Biden, Obama's v.p., in 2020, it must have brought back his resentment of Obama bigly, and losing to Biden was an even greater blow to his wounded pride than losing to someone else would have have been.
In 2024, he thought going up against Biden again would finally be his chance to get the revenge he so craved. Having to run against Kamala instead must be a huge disappointment to him!
I guess that's how life goes when you're a petty, sociopathic narcissist who is driven only by greed, the need to win at any cost, and and a desperate thirst for revenge. What a pathetic loser he is.

(13,485 posts)If he weren't such a a powerful and dangerous existential threat to any sense of unity and political will to enact policies that reflect our highest, rather than lowest impulses, he would be deserving of compassionate intervention.
As it is, as one Republican put it (very rough paraphrase) Trump and MAGA extremists are a cancer that must be eliminated from the political board.
lastlib
(28,391 posts)To accomplish that meant erasing Obama's biggest accomplishment, thus diminishing the man he couldn't beat head-to-head. Again, it was a revenge crusade.

(13,485 posts)...as boundless as his delusions of grandeur.
With him, everything is personal. Those who stroke his ego are allies, those who slight him, even in minor ways are targets of his wrath.
And having a person with true power, gravitas, intelligence, and reach mock him is unbearable. Nothing short of utter destruction of those he names enemy can actually "settle" the score for him because he is just too emotionally immature and fragile.

(56,223 posts)Sure, there's something to that argument.
But if Donnie wasn't depressed due to the suddenly being in a losing position to a girrrl, never mind a biracial minority, and possibly also having ptsd from the shooting, he'd simply say he clobbered Biden so bigly he forced him to give up before the election.
Under "normal" circumstances, he'd be crowing loudly about an unprecedented victory even before the election, and now he gets to clobber the backup candidate, democrats on the run, whatever.
So at a minimum, there's more going on than just annoyance at the change in plans. That said, they certainly did go all-in on a Biden-bashing story and are struggling to find a strategy that works against Harris.
It's a testament to one of the flaws of the politics of personal destruction. Had they been attacking administration policies, that would have easily carried over to a campaign against the vice president. Instead they hammered very personal stuff like hunter and Biden's age. Pretty useless now that Harris is the candidate.

(3,786 posts)He can't "pivot" because he doesn't have anything to "pivot" with. This kind of garbage puts the demise of Repukes solely on The Felon which IS NOT TRUE! Repukes MUST feel the pain of the infectious fuck their ratfuckery has for years brought to fruition. He didn't take over the Repuke party. He had no policies to begin with, he's always just danced to their tune only out in the open. This is the Repuke party on parade.
Fuck this stupid lame ass statement.
ShazzieB
(22,708 posts)But I agree that his not having anything to pivot with is also part of the picture, along with Harris' race and gender, and other things as well. None of these factors are mutually exclusive.

(3,786 posts)I'm seeing more and more statements in MSM like this. It effectively allows the Repuke party to wash their hands of what he represents under a dry faucet. The infection on that side is deep, very deep. They silently can't wait to get him out of the way so they can get a smarter version of him in place like a Cotton or a Youngkin who will do exactly what they are doing now without the baggage. Statements like this remove the focus from what's driving this fascist parties attempt at burning this experiment in self governance to the ground. We cannot forget how many traitors, whether they have silenced themselves or not when it comes to The Felon, are crawling all over our Capitol. I could care less if someone makes an excuse for whatever the hell this is he's doing.
Plus, Chuck Todd. Can't disappear fast enough.

(2,823 posts)So yeah, I think that tracks. And revenge, more than avenge, because avenge can have an element of justice to it - a good person can avenge a wrong so it's a more positive word, while revenge carries more of an implicit desire to harm in retaliation.

(7,096 posts)When it came down to it, and people walked into the voting booth, Trump wouldn't have come out on top. The media kept beating it's "he's too old" drum and manipulating the mostly Republican-funded polling data to the front of the pile. Trump has convinced just about every American he can possibly convince to vote for him, and that's not nearly as many Americans as he convinced the past two times. He was well behind Biden in financial support. And the one person who keeps making the case with good reasons for not voting for Trump is Trump. Every time he opens his mouth, he inserts his foot.
He's incapable of sustaining a campaign for as long as he wanted to make this. And none of those people threatening to withhold support from Biden if he didn't quit would have just let Trump take it because Biden didn't do what they wanted. Anyone who knew the stakes wouldn't have allowed that to happen.
Age, not the achievements or accomplishment, or agenda, was the biggest issue. The Democrats are still running on exactly what Biden would have run on. They just changed the demographics.
Whether he knows it or acknowledges it or believes it, Kamala Harris running for President was Biden's idea, and he's the one who brought it about.
And it looks like he's going to lose to Joe again.

I'll bet they already had ads in the can for October and an October surprise planned.
I'm sure they had all kinds of stuff planned to whack Joe down the stretch.
They spent a lot of resources trying to tear him apart.
All that money and a lot of their effort - largely paid for by the MAGAts is down the political toilet.

(10,943 posts)... about Chuck's theory. I differ... I think most people are just sicker of Trump than ever. Harris is fresh. I believe Trump wants to win the vote more than anything. I hear GWB wanted to win the vote very badly after the Supreme Court decision. Trump wants to win more than the Electoral College. or, maybe he really thinks he got more votes than Clinton or Biden? In any case, I think he's not effective because the available Trump voters are sick of him.
